2/14/2025 10:18:00 PM | Baseball
HOUSTON, TEXAS– The Minnesota Gopher baseball team (1-0, 0-0 B1G) picked up an 14-3 win over the Houston Cougars (0-1, 0-0 Big 12) on opening night.
"I am proud of our guys for the way they came out and competed," said head coach Ty McDevitt. "Obviously there is a lot of emotion around opening day, and we got to a good pitcher early. I think that set the tone for the rest of the night."
Drew Berkland, Weber Neels, and Kris Hokenson led the offense with two hits. Neels added four RBIs.
Cole Selvig picked up the victory on the mound, throwing 6.0 innings striking out six. Joe Sperry entered in relief in the seventh, picking up four strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work.
How it Happened
The Gophers jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs on four hits. Josh Fitzgerald got the game started with a hit by pitch followed by a Drew Berkland single. Weber Neels got the Gophers on the board with an RBI double to score two. Freshman Jameson Martin recorded his first collegiate hit to score Neels. Kris Hokenson then singled to score Jake Elbeery. All nine Gophers made it to the plate in the first inning.
Minnesota put up four more in the fourth. Charlie Sutherland's fielder's choice scored Jack Spanier who reached on a walk. Berkland then singled to score Fitgerald who also reached on a walk, before Weber Neels hit his first home run of the season to take a 8-0 lead.
The Gophers added three more in the fifth all with two outs. Hokenson reached on a walk then came around to score off a Spanier triple, he later scored an error. Sutherland then doubled down the right field line to score Fitzgearald.
The 'U' tacked on two more in the sixth after singles from Easton Richter, Elbeery and Hokenson. Hokenson and Martin picked up the two RBIs of the inning.
The Cougars then scored three at the bottom of the sixth.
