Nabwe Throws Top Weight Throw Mark in NCAA at Snowshoe Open

Minnesota won 12 different events at the Snowshoe Open on Friday.

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota track and field team saw redshirt sophomore Anthonett Nabwe put forth the new No. 1 weight throw mark in the country on Friday at the Snowshoe Open at the University Fieldhouse. Nabwe's winning mark of 23.56m (77-3 3/4) puts her one centimeter ahead of the new No. 2 weight throw mark in the NCAA.

Nabwe's lifetime best throw came on her fifth attempt of her series and improved on her No. 3 mark in school history. The Liberia native posted five throws all beyond 22 meters on Friday, with her sixth and final throw being her only foul. Nabwe's teammate Hadley Streit was the runner-up in the event with a solid mark of 21.95m (72-0 1/4), only about six inches away from her lifetime best she set at the Gopher Classic on Feb. 8.

On top of winning the weight throw, Nabwe also was victorious in the women's shot put with a 17.16m (56-3 3/4) on her second attempt of the competition. The toss for Nabwe was less than three inches off of her indoor season best heading into the Big Ten Indoor Championships next weekend in Indianapolis.

Minnesota had a number of impressive unattached student-athletes compete on Friday, with Hakeem Ford being one of the highlights. In his final indoor competition of the season Ford set a meet record with a triple jump mark of 15.83m (51-11 1/4) which, outdoors, would slot him at the No. 5 triple jump all-time at Minnesota.

Kostas Zaltos once again was dominant in the men's weight throw. The Greek tossed a season's-best mark of 23.88m (78-4 1/4) to win the Snowshoe Open. Zaltos' mark came on his second attempt with all five of his legal throws being better than any single throw from the rest of the men's weight throw field.

Minnesota's remaining wins on Friday at the Snowshoe Open included: Aaron Charles (60m - 6.75), Charlotte Lange (3000m - 9:53.23), Sam Snitker (High Jump - 1.99m | 6-6 1/4), Charles Godfred (Long Jump - 7.84m | 25-8 3/4), Alliyah McNeil (Long Jump - 6.08m | 19-11 1/2), Jak Urlacher (Pole Vault - 5.17m | 16-11 1/2), Lexy Berger (Pole Vault - 4.14m | 13-7) and the men's 4x400m relay (3:18.94).

The Maroon and Gold will now shift its focus to the postseason, with the Big Ten Indoor Championships being first from Feb. 28-March 1 in Indianapolis. Any Golden Gophers that qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships will then compete in Virginia Beach, Va., from March 14-15.
