Minnesota Softball Sweeps Day One of the Gopher Indoor Classic

GAME 1 | Minnesota 3, North Dakota State 1
MINNEAPOLIS, MN --The Minnesota Golden Gophers (6-9, 0-0 B1G) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 3-1 win against the North Dakota State Bison (7-8, 0-0 Summit) on Friday.
Junior Sydney Schwartz (2-5) started in the circle and picked up the win for Minnesota. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing two walks and striking out two.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gophers got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Senior Taylor Krapf put Minnesota on the board with a leadoff home run off sophomore Addie Bowers.
The Bison then tied the ballgame at one before the 'U' came back to reclaim their advantage in the fourth inning. Minnesota plated two runs off of North Dakota State pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of junior Maggie Werner, which brought the score to 3-1 in favor of the Gophers. The score remained 3-1 for the rest of the game, as Minnesota held on for the win.
GAME NOTES
» Minnesota's highest scoring inning was the fourth, when it pushed two runs across.
» The Gophers had control of the rest of the game after moving ahead of the Bison 1-0 in the bottom of the second.
» The Gophers out-hit the Bison at a 6-4 clip.
» Minnesota pitchers faced 26 North Dakota State hitters in the game, allowing 14 ground balls and four fly balls while striking out two.
» The Maroon and Gold drew four walks from North Dakota State pitching.
» Krapf led the Gophers at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a home run and an RBI.
» North Dakota State was led offensively by sophomore Jasmyn Yessian, who went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
» Bowers led the Bison pitching staff, throwing six innings of three-run ball.
GAME 2 | Minnesota 7, Wagner 0
MINNEAPOLIS, MN --Junior Presley Hosick and Freshman Natalie Susa combined to toss a no-hit shutout on Friday as the Minnesota Golden Gophers (7-9, 0-0 B1G) blanked the Wagner Seahawks (0-5, 0-0 Northeast) 7-0.
Hosick (2-1) started and picked up the win for Minnesota, going five shutout innings without giving up a hit, walking none, and striking out one. Susa was dealing out of the bullpen as well, going two shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking two and striking out four.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gophers took the lead for good in the second, scoring for the first time in the inning. Minnesota scored twice in the inning, including one on a solo shot from senior Valencia.
The Maroon and Gold then tacked on runs in the fifth inning when they scored five times. The big hit in that inning was a two-run home run off the bat of junior Maggie Werner.

» Wagner was led offensively by Emma Rocha, who went 0-for-2.
» Emma Crosby led the Seahawks pitching staff, throwing 1.2 shutout innings.
UP NEXT
The 'U' will be back in action tomorrow. They will host Miami (OH) on day 2 of the Gopher Indoor Classic. Following the game the Gophers will host a youth clinic for grades 2-6 on the field at US Bank Stadium.
