Schmitz falls in Milwaukee Tennis Classic Final

ELM GROVE, Wis. - The University of Minnesota tennis team continued play Sunday at the 49th annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic. Aiva Schmitz reached the singles final and finished as runner-up.

"We had a great weekend of tennis and the team really competed hard," head coach Lois Arterberry said. "Aiva making it to the finals of the singles main draw after being out for a week and a half was great to see,she came in with the mentality to go far, stepped up, and showed great leadership. Jeselle Ante also had a strong showing in her first tournament of the fall, and I'm excited to see how she develops throughout the semester. Anali and Mia both had close first-round matches but bounced back with wins in the consolation draw, which was encouraging. Overall, I've been impressed with how the Gophers have turned things around from last year and come in with a much more competitive mindset, and I'm looking forward to seeing this group continue to compete hard at the ITA's in a couple weeks and at Iowa State next weekend."

Schmitz fell to Kansas State's Martaa Chogsomjav 6-3, 6-4 in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic singles final. She won four matches throughout the weekend to advance, defeating opponents from Ole Miss, Ball State and Western Michigan.
In the consolation rounds, Mia Liepert and Jeselle Ante earned a 6-0 doubles win over Western Michigan's Audrey Smitek and Marielou Baudouin. Ante added a singles victory against Lola Glantz, 6-2, 6-4. Anali Kocevar fell to Western Michigan's Sienna Osborne 7-6, 0-6, 10-1.
