Gophers Back Home to Host Iowa Hawkeyes

STARTING FIVE
• The Golden Gopher men's basketball team is in the midst of playing three games in six days. After a win at Northwestern Saturday, the Gophers host No. 25 Iowa Tuesday, followed by No. 24 USC Friday during this opening January stretch. Minnesota also hosts Wisconsin for its third-straight game on Jan. 13.
• Minnesota is looking for its fifth-straight win after an 84-78 victory over Northwestern. The Gophers trailed 67-60 with 4:39 left, but outscored the Wildcats 24-11 down the stretch. The Gophers shot 54.9 percent from the field, which was better than their conference best 48.9 percent vs. Indiana. Minnesota also shot 84.6 from the charity stripe, third-best of the season. The win snapped a three-game losing skid vs. Northwestern and marked the first win in Evanston since Feb. 23, 2020.
• Minnesota had a couple of career marks in the win at Northwestern. Along with tying a career-high 18 points, Isaac Asuma had a career-best four three-pointers. Langston Reynolds' career-high 13 assists tied for fourth-most in Minnesota history. Grayson Grove had a career day by going 6-of-6 from the field for a career-high 12 points.
• Against Northwestern, Cade Tyson scored his eighth game with 20-plus points (two with 30-plus), and he has reached double-figures in all 14 games this season. He ranks second in the B1G in scoring with 22.1 points, 10th nationally, while is 309 points rank first in the B1G and 13th nationally.
• Tuesday features two first-year Big Ten coaches in Minnesota's Niko Medved and Iowa's Ben McCollum. Medved is in his 13th season as head coach, while McCollum is in his 17th after one season at Drake and 15 years at his alma mater, Northwest Missouri State. Medved has faced Iowa once in his coaching career, dating back to 2017 at Drake, while this is McCollum's coaching debut against the Gophers.
PASSING IT AROUND
• On assist percentage for the season, the Gophers currently lead the entire nation at 75.9 percent. As of late, Minnesota had 25 assists off 28 field goals vs. Northwestern, 20 assists on 22 makes vs. FDU, 26 assists on 30 FGs vs. Campbell, 27 assists on 28 field goals vs. Texas Southern and 18 assists on 19 makes vs. Chicago State. The second-highest in the nation is Michigan State at 71.0 percent.
SHARING THE LOVE
• Saturday's win over Northwestern marked the fifth time this season in which four or more Gophers have scored double-digit points in a game and the third time in the last four games. Minnesota's first game came against Alcorn State, followed by Indiana, Texas Southern, Campbell and now Northwestern. Minnesota is 5-0 when four or more Gophers score in double digits.
ALL-TIME SERIES
• Minnesota leads the all-time series at 103-96 over the Iowa Hawkeyes, dating back to 1902. The Gophers won the last meeting, 72-67, in Iowa City last year, breaking a six-game Iowa streak. Dawson Garcia scored 20 points and Femi Odukale added a season-high 18 points and team-high eight rebounds to earn Minnesota its first win at Carver Hawkeye Arena since 2015.
• The Gophers are looking for their first home win against the Hawkeyes since a Christmas night barn burner in 2020. Minnesota defeated then-No. 4 Iowa, 102-95 in overtime. Brandon Johnson made all four of his 3-point attempts in overtime and eight for the game when he finished with 26 points and nine rebounds. Marcus Carr also had 30 points in that game.
ABOUT THE HAWKEYES
• The No. 25 Hawkeyes are 12-2 this season and 2-1 in the Big Ten. Iowa started the conference season splitting action against Michigan State (71-52 loss) and Maryland (83-64 win), and defeated UCLA at home Saturday, 74-61. Iowa's 12-2 start is the best start for the program since the 2020-21 season.
• Iowa had five players follow Ben McCollum from Drake to Iowa this season, including leading scorer Bennett Stirtz, who averages a team-best 17.8 points, 73 assists, 82 field goals, and 25 steals. Robert Morris transfer Alvaro Folgueiras follows with 9.7 ppg, has 30 assists and shoots 46.5% from three in 20 minutes of play. Cam Manyawu, also a Drake transfer, is shooting 64.8 from the field and a team-best 4.7 rebounds.
• As a team, Iowa is averaging 80.7 points, and allows just 60.1, which ranks first in the league and fourth nationally. Hawkeyes have the league's second-best field goal percentage (52.9), which ranks fourth in the nation in their effective field goal percentage. The Hawkeyes have eight players averaging over 15 minutes a game and rank third in the B1G in bench points.
