MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota's Charlie Millard has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time in his career, the conference announced Thursday.
A redshirt freshman, Millard helped No. 7 Minnesota to a 21-16 win at No. 4 Iowa Friday. The win marked the Golden Gophers' first win over the Hawkeyes since a 2014 win in Iowa City.Â
Facing No. 12 Jordan Williams at 157 pounds, the 21st-ranked Millard was the aggressor in the match, jumping out to a 4-2 lead through one period. Millard's takedown off a single leg attack was followed by a reversal from Williams, but Millard was able to escape.Â
Leading 5-3 with 1:10 to go, Millard sealed the highest ranked bonus-point win of his career with a takedown and four nearfall points, capturing a 13-3 victory and giving the Gophers a 15-5 lead going into the intermission.
A native of Mequon, Wis., Millard was also recognized by the Big Ten last year as Freshman of the Week when he went 3-0 to win the Daktronics Open
Millard joins teammates Koy Hopke (a two-time winner this season) and Max McEnelly (a three-time winner last year) as Gophers to win Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors more than once since the award was established last season.
Minnesota is back in action this weekend with a pair of road duals. Friday, the Golden Gophers visit No. 15 Rutgers at 6 p.m. CT before closing out their road slate at Maryland Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. Both matches will be carried by Big Ten Plus.
