McEnelly Nets Third B1G Freshman of the Week Honor

MINNEAPOLIS -- For the third time this season Minnesota wrestler Max McEnelly has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Thursday.

The redshirt freshman from Waconia, Minn., stayed undefeated for his career as he battled No. 8 Gabe Arnold of Iowa Friday night. After a scoreless first period, each wrestler logged an escape to send the match to sudden victory. In the extra frame, McEnelly, ranked fourth in the nation, scored on a re-attack, grabbing Arnold's left leg and rolling him over before securing the takedown.

The victory moved McEnelly to 18-0 on the year and 33-0 including his redshirt season a year ago. He's 6-0 against ranked opponents, highlighted by a 3-0 mark against top-10 opponents.

With his latest honor, McEnelly matches Penn State's Josh Barr with a league-best three Freshman of the Week accolades this season. McEnelly was named Freshman of the Week on Nov. 14 and then swept both the overall and freshman honors on Dec. 5.

In addition to McEnelly, Charlie Millard was also awarded Freshman of the Week honors on Nov. 21, while Gable Steveson took home Wrestler of the Week honors on Feb. 12.

Minnesota closes out the 2024-25 regular season Friday night when it hosts No. 3 Iowa. Match time is set for 8 p.m. on Big Ten Network.

With the dual season concluded, Minnesota is preparing for the Big Ten Championships, March 8-9, in Evanston, Ill.
