MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota's Gable Steveson, the top-ranked heavyweight in the country, went 2-0 last week to help No. 7 Minnesota win a pair of ranked matchups. As a result, he's been named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week.
Friday night at fourth-ranked Ohio State, Steveson won a top-10 matchup against No. 9 Nick Feldman. Steveson kept his bonus rate at 100 percent with a 13-4 major decision. Steveson scored a pair of first-period takedowns to take control early and pushed the lead to 9-3 after two to win comfortably. It was his fourth win of the year over a top-10 opponents, two of which were by fall, one by tech fall and one major decision.
Sunday against 28th-ranked Purdue, Steveson needed less than three minutes to take care of Hayden Filipovich. It was the fourth first-period tech fall for Steveson this season and his seventh overall in 10 matches. Four takedowns and a pair of three-point nearfalls gave him his 62nd straight win, three back of second place in Gopher history, and got him to 10-0 this season and 95-2 in his career.
It's the second time in Steveson's career that he's been named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week, also earning the distinction as a freshman in November of 2018.
Steveson becomes the third Gopher to win weekly awards from the conference this year. Max McEnelly was named Freshman of the Week on Nov. 14, and then swept the honors on Dec. 5. Charlie Millard was also awarded Freshman of the Week on Nov. 21.
Minnesota closes out the 2024-25 regular season Friday night when it hosts No. 3 Iowa. Match time is set for 8 p.m. on Big Ten Network.
