Gophers Continue Nonconference Road Swing at Wyoming, Colorado State

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota tennis team continues its nonconference road swing this weekend with matches against Wyoming and Colorado State.
The Golden Gophers will travel to Laramie, Wyo. to face Wyoming (4-2) on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. CT, followed by a matchup against Colordao State (2-2) on Sunday, Feb. 8, at 12:30 p.m CT.
Scouting Wyoming
Minnesota and Wyoming will meet for the first time in series history. The Cowgirls have won three straight matches after opening the season 1-2 and are led by Mountain West Player of the Week Anastasiia Kochelaevskaia, who went 5-1 in singles play during the opening week of the season, along with freshman Violetta Borodina, the conference Freshman of the Week.
Scouting Colorado State
Minnesota and Colorado State have met twice in program history, with the Gophers holding a 2-0 series advantage. Minnesota swept the Rams 7-0 in the most recent meeting Feb. 8, 2025. Colorado State enters the matchup after a 4-2 win over Eastern Washington and is led by Luana Avelar, who holds an 18.00 World Tennis Number and is 1-0 this season at the No. 1 singles position.
The Season So Far
The Gophers have played two doubleheaders this season and won all four matches to open the year. Minnesota opened the season with home victories over Iowa State and North Dakota, then swept a road doubleheader in DeKalb, Ill., against Western Michigan and Wyoming.
Amazing Ante
Junior Jeselle Ante was named to the 2026 Big Ten Women's Tennis Players to Watch list, the conference announced Jan. 5. She opened the season by going 4-0 in singles and 3-1 in doubles and leads the team with 13 wins. Ante competes at the No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles positions.
Pinto Power
Senior Sofia Pinto has won seven straight matches dating back to Oct. 31. She has opened the spring season 4-0 in singles and 3-1 in doubles and recorded the 70th singles win of her career with a victory over Northern Illinois on Jan. 31.
Schmitz's Success
Senior Aiva Schmitz was named Big Ten Player of the Week on Jan. 28 after going 2-0 in singles and 1-1 in doubles against Iowa State and North Dakota. She earned a ranked win over No. 45 Maria De La Paz Alberto of Iowa State in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5, and defeated Ethel Li 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 1 singles position against North Dakota. Schmitz is 3-1 this season at No. 1 singles and is ranked No. 117 in the ITA singles rankings, becoming the first Gopher to be ranked since at least 2022.
Racking up Ranked Wins
The Maroon and Gold earned three ranked wins against Iowa State. At No. 1 doubles, Jeselle Ante and Sofia Pinto defeated No. 34 Maria De La Paz Alberto and Stanislava Shulzhenko, 6-3. In singles, Aiva Schmitz defeated No. 45 Maria De La Paz Alberto, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5, while Mia Liepert beat No. 124 Stanislava Shulzhenko, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.
