Gophers Head to the Kaufman-Brand Open

The Kaufman-Brand
The Golden Gophers continue their early season schedule of open meets, with the Kaufman-Brand Open this weekend. The meet begins at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21 and will include more than 500 wrestlers from Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA and NJCAA schools competing in what has become the largest single-day wrestling tournament in the nation.
The Records
The Gophers are coming off a season where they posted a 15-8 overall record and a 5-3 mark in the Big Ten. Minnesota was fifth place in the Big Ten in the regular season as well as fifth at the Big Ten Championships. At the NCAA Championships the Gophers finished in 14th.
The Series
2009-10 will mark the fifth straight season that the Golden Gophers have been to the Kaufman-Brand Open, dating back to the 2005-06 season.
Last Match-Up
Last season at the Kaufman-Brand, Zach Sanders at 125, and Mike Thorn at 141, each won individual titles. In addition to their two champions, the Gophers also had runners up in Dustin Schlatter, Scott Glasser and Ben Berhow at 157, 165 and heavyweight respectively.

Last Time Out
Last weekend, the Golden Gophers opened the season in impressive fashion, winning seven titles at the Bison Open. Zach Sanders, Jayson Ness (co), David Thorn (co), Mike Thorn, Mario Mason, Scott Glasser, Sonny Yohn, Ben Berhow (co), and Tony Nelson (co) all won or shared champion honors.
Next Up
The Golden Gophers will return home next weekend for their first home meet of the season, when they host Cal State Bakersfield in their first home dual. The dual meet will be held in Williams Arean with a 7:00 p.m. start.
