Gallego Posts Big Win in Loss to Wake Forest

Sebastian Gallego knocked off the nation's 41st-ranked player, but Minnesota fell to Wake Forest 4-2 in the opening match of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Indoor National regional tournament on Saturday in Lexington, Ky.
The 31st-ranked Gophers also got a singles win from Dino Bilankov, though 16th-ranked Wake Forest avenged a 5-2 setback to Minnesota from last season. Minnesota is now 1-1 for the season and plays Sunday at 10 a.m. against Michigan, which lost to Kentucky 4-2. Wake Forest will face the host Wildcats at 2 p.m. with the winner advancing with 15 other schools to the ITA Indoor Nationals in Charlottesville, Va.
Gallego, ranked 67th in the country, rolled past 41st-ranked Iain Atkinson 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Bilankov's win was a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 decision over Jon Wolff at No. 4 singles.
Wake Forest claimed the doubles point when Atkinson and Steven Forman, the nation's 16th-ranked tandem, beat Gallego and Phillip Arndt 8-6 in the deciding match at No. 1. The Demon Deacons also got a win at No. 2 from Wolff and Zach Leslie over Rok Bonin and Tobias Wernet 8-5 before the Gophers rallied with a win at No. 3 by Julian Dehn and Brendan Ruddock over Danny Kreyman and Frank Carleton 8-6.
Gallego's win evened the match, but Wake Forest took the next two decisions with Forman beating Wernet 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1 and Carleton posting a 6-4, 6-1 win over Bonin at No. 2. Bilankov pulled Minnesota within 3-2 before the Demon Deacons sealed the win with Kreyman defeating Arndt 6-2, 7-5 at No. 5. Leslie was leading Dehn 6-4, 5-4 at No. 6 when the match was suspended.
