Doubles Play Complete at Big Ten Indoors

The Minnesota men's tennis team is competing in Big Ten Indoor Championships this weekend in East Lansing, Mich. The event began today and concludes on Monday, Nov. 1. The majority of matches this weekend will be held at host Michigan State's indoor tennis facility, while some select matches will be played at the Michigan Athletic Club. Doubles competition was held today, while singles play will run Saturday through Monday.

Representing Minnesota at the event is senior Derek Peterson, juniors Phillip Arndt, Michael Sicora, Julian Dehn, Eddie Svenda and sophomore Brendan Ruddock.

Dehn and Ruddock teamed up for doubles play and were in the Flight A Doubles bracket. They won their first two matches against Michigan State and Illinois before falling in a tight semifinal matchup 9-8 (5) to Billy Bertha and Petr Satral of Wisconsin. Dehn and Ruddock then lost another close consolation match 9-8 (7) to Northwestern's Joshua Gaves and Spencer Wolf.

Arndt and Peterson played in the Flight B Doubles bracket and won three straight matches after opening with an 8-6 loss to Michigan State. They defeated teams from Purdue, Michigan State and Illinois en route to posting a 3-1 record on the day.

Svenda and Sicora also competed in the Flight B Doubles bracket and were 2-2 on Friday. They dropped their first two matches to teams from Iowa and Northwestern before winning matches against Penn State and Iowa.

Singles play begins Saturday at 8 a.m.   

Last week the Gophers competed in the ITA Central Regional Championships in Norman, Okla. The team completes fall play at the Nov. 12-14 Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic in Miami, Fla.
