Gophers Drop Big Ten Opener at Michigan

Minnesota dropped its Big Ten opener on Saturday as the Gophers lost to Michigan for the second time this season with a 5-2 decision in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Tobias Wernet and Rok Bonin each won singles matches for the 39th-ranked Gophers, who fell to 7-6 overall. Michigan also beat the Gophers 4-2 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association qualifying tournament on Jan. 31 in Lexington, Ky. The 28th-ranked Wolverines are now 6-7 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten.
Wernet avenged a loss to Jason Jung from the earlier dual match this season, posting a 7-5, 4-6, (14-12) win at No. 2 singles. Bonin posted a 7-6, 6-4 win over Mike Sroczynski at No. 3.
Michigan set the tone for its win with two doubles wins in tiebreakers to take the doubles point. Minnesota won the first match when Dino Bilankov and Julian Dehn won 8-6 over Chris Cha and Chris Madden at No. 3. Michigan's George Navas and Sroczynski beat Sebastian Gallego and Phillip Arndt 7-1 in a tiebreaker at No. 1 before Jung and Evan King clinched the doubles point with a 7-3 tiebreaker win over Bonin and Wernet.
The Wolverines won four straight-set singles matches to take the match. Cha opened with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Brendan Ruddock at No. 6 and Navas followed with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Bilankov. King beat Gallego 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 and Madden downed Arndt 6-4, 7-6 at No. 5.
The match was the middle of the Gophers' three matches in Michigan over the weekend. Minnesota beat Western Michigan on Friday and takes on Michigan State on Sunday.
