Plasencia is now a four-time Big Ten Coach of the Year honoree.
“I’m honored to receive this award, but it’s so much more of a reflection of this team than anything else,” said Plasencia. “I share this award with an outstanding staff of coaches and obviously a wonderful group of student-athletes.”
The Big Ten also recognized its event champions as All-Big Ten First Team honorees. Gophers are Big Ten Champions...Again! - Big Ten Championships Review
Sunday, May 16 – The Golden Gophers extended their streak of Big Ten titles to four with a 21-point margin of victory at the Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Bloomington, Ind., this weekend. Minnesota did not add to its individual champion count on Sunday, May 16, but the Gopher depth took over to send the Maroon and Gold home with another team trophy.
Minnesota tallied 145 points, to 124 by runner-up Wisconsin and 115 for third-place Ohio State. The Gophers scored two athletes in the triple jump and 5,000-meter run providing a insurmountable 20-point lead over the Badgers by the last event, the 4x400-meter relay.
After three Gophers celebrated individual crowns – Micah Hegerle in the hammer, Ben Peterson in the pole vault and R.J. McGinnis in the decathlon – in the first two days of competition, it was the sheer number of placewinners that pushed the Gophers over the top on championship Sunday.
The triple jump and 5,000-meter run were pressure-packed events. The Gophers have built a 63-point lead heading into Sunday. Wisconsin won the 4x100-meter relay and grabbed the top two spots in the 1,500-meter run and quickly closed the gap on Sunday. The Gophers countered with three important runner-up performances by Trey Davis in the shot put, Raymond Blackledge in the triple jump and Chris Rombough in the 5,000-meter run, as well as a big scoring output in the 800 meters.
After placing third in the discus on Saturday, Davis enjoyed another career day on Sunday in the shot put. Davis landed a career-best throw of 60-0 1/2 on his third throw of prelims and held the lead until the fifth round of throws in the final. Davis’ toss ranks eighth in school history.
Blackledge, a fifth-year senior, sailed past the 50-foot mark for the first time in his career. He was eighth after the prelims, jumped to third after his first attempt of the final and then up to second with his final jump of 50-2, the eighth-best leap in Minnesota history. Oladipo Fagbemi matched Blackledge’s distance of 50-2, but took third since Blackledge’s second-best jump was farther.
Rombough’s performance in the 5,000 meters was dramatic since at early stages of the race four Wisconsin Badgers were at the front of the pack. Rombough ran a tough, strategic race clocking a time of 13 minutes, 52.48 seconds outlasting each and every one of the Badgers. Rombough also placed second in the 10,000-meter run on Friday. Mike Torchia added a sixth-place finish in the 5,000 meters for the Gophers with a time of 14:04.02.
Minnesota picked up 14 points in the 800-meter run. Travis Burkstrand (1:49.30) edged teammate Harun Abda (1:49.36) for third place. David Pachuta was the third scorer, placing sixth in 1:49.67. Burkstrand’s and Pachuta’s times were career bests.
Ben Blankenship finished third in the 1,500-meter run, helping to outset the Badgers’ outburst in the event. Blankenship posted a time of 3:44.21.
Both the Gophers’ 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays contributed fourth-place finishes. The 4x100 relay of Sean King, Cameron Boy, Ryan Todhunter and Fagbemi ran a time of 41.43 seconds. The 4x400 relay of John Holton, Logan Stroman, Pachuta and Abda ran a season-best time of 3:08.66.
Paul Hoplin added a fourth-place showing in the javelin with a throw of 206-5.
“I’m proud of this team,” said Golden Gopher head coach Steve Plasencia. “We had some great performances from a lot of people this weekend. What can I say, we did it again!”
Saturday, May 15 – The Minnesota men’s track & field team continues to build on its team lead with titles and depth at the Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Bloomington, Ind. After the second day and eight events scored, Minnesota has more than doubled up its nearest competitor. The Gophers have compiled 79 points, followed by Indiana with 36, and Purdue and Wisconsin with 35.
The Golden Gophers’ brightest moment of the second day of the Championships was the performance of senior R.J. McGinnis, who captured the decathlon by just two points over Michigan’s Frank Shotwell. McGinnis needed a gutsy performance in the 1,500-meter run, the decathlon’s 10th and final event, to pull off the victory. McGinnis trailed Shotwell by 23 points going into the 1,500 meters then dug deep to find an extra gear in the race’s last 100 meters. He finished with a time of 4:35.75, beating Shotwell by just over four seconds. The final tally saw McGinnis score 7,381 points to Shotwell’s 7,379.
Jack Szmanda and Joey Schwecke added fourth and fifth-place finishes, respectively. Szmanda tallied a score of 7, 116, while Schwecke scored 7,081.
Minnesota was able to build its lead by having two or more athletes score in an event. The discus is a perfect example. The Gophers went third, fourth and sixth in the final standings. Trey Davis led the way, placing third with a throw of 172-9. Micah Hegerle, who won the hammer title on Friday, was fourth with a toss of 170-1. Tyler Kleinhuizen competed the trio’s scoring by placing sixth in a distance of 164-9.
Oladipo Fagbemi and Addison Demer contributed points in the long jump. Fagbemi placed fifth with a leap of 23-7 1/4. Demer was sixth in 23-5 1/2.
Completing the scoring on Saturday was Matt Fisher in the high jump. Fisher cleared his final bar at 6-11 1/4 .
Friday, May 14 – Minnesota captured two event titles in the first day of the 2010 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. Micah Hegerle captured the win in the hammer throw, while Ben Peterson completed an indoor-outdoor title sweep by winning the pole vault.
Hegerle, a redshirt freshmen, landed his best throw -208 feet, 3 inches – in his third attempt of prelims and the mark held. Hegerle’s winning throw was nearly eight feet farther than the second-place effort. Hegerle, who will compete in the discus on Saturday, is the second Gopher to capture a Big Ten title in the hammer.
Peterson enjoyed a career day in winning his first Big Ten outdoor title, but overall his third Conference pole vault crown. The Gopher junior cleared a personal-best height of 17-8 1/2 to capture Minnesota’s eighth pole vault title but first since 1997 (Vesa Rantanen). Peterson passed until the height of 16-8 3/4, then soared over the bar in his first try and again at 17-0 3/4. He cleared 17-4 1/2 and 17-8 1/2 on his second attempt at each height.
Brock Spandl added a third-place finish in the pole vault, clearing a season-best height of 17-0 3/4.
Day one of the decathlon turned into an interesting battle between two Gophers – R.J. McGinnis and Joey Schwecke. Between the two, the lead changed hands four times over the five events with McGinnis, an indoor heptathlon All-American, grabbing the day one lead with 3,908 points. Schwecke is only 15 points behind McGinnis with a total of 3,893. Jack Szmanda is sixth with 3,751 points.
Schwecke owns the lead through the first two events, first running a career-best time of 10.93 seconds in the 100-meter dash and then landing a season-best long jump of 23-2 1/4.
McGinnis took the lead for the first time by topping the field in the shot put with a throw of 47-4 1/4. Schwecke cleared 6-6 in the high jump to recapture the lead after four events before McGinnis’ time of 50.83 seconds in 400 meters edged him back in front of his Gopher teammate. Schwecke ran a time of 51.47in the race.
Chris Rombough placed second in the 10,000-meter run in the final event of the first day of the Championships. Rombough clocked a career-best time of 29:10.67.

Minnesota Wins Big Ten Indoor Team Title
The Golden Gophers won six individual titles to win the Big Ten Indoor team title amassing an impressive tally of 160.5 points, the second-highest winning total in Big Ten history. Conference runners-up are tabbed All-Big Ten Second Team honorees. Gophers honored on this squad were Chris Rombough (5,000 and 10,000 meters), Raymond Blackledge (triple jump) and Trey Davis (shot put).
Senior Logan Stroman was the Minnesota recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. These student-athletes are now candidates for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the Conference office will honor one male and one female student-athlete from each institution at the end of the school year.
