Members of the Minnesota men's tennis team are playing in both the Wildcat Invitational this weekend and the USTA/ITA Central Region Tennis Championships.
Senior Michael Sicora and freshmen Eric Frueh and Mathieu Froment are competing in the Northwestern-hosted Wildcat Invitational.
Froment is playing in the top singles flight and posted a 5-7, 7-6 (5), 1-0 (5) win against senior Matija Palinic of DePaul.
Sicora, who is playing in the second singles flight, dropped Drake Kakar 7-6 (5), 6-2 in the first round. He will face Sven Kasper of DePaul in the second round.
Frueh rallied to beat Toledo's Nicholas Wong 3-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (7) in three sets in the first round of singles play in the third set.
Sicora and Frueh teamed up for doubles competition and won their first match in the top flight 9-8 (6) against Zeyad Montasser and Simon Blomberg of Western Michigan. The Gopher tandem fell 9-8 (7) in the second round to Wisconsin's Austin Akers and Jack Larsen.
Senior Julian Dehn and Phillip Arndt lead a contingent of six Gophers who are competing in Tulsa, Okla., at the USTA/ITA Central Region Tennis Championships. Also in the field are junior Rok Bonin, sophomore Juan Pablo Ramirez, sophomore Brendan Ruddock and freshman Leandro Toledo. Bonin is seeded seventh and play begins on Saturday.
This is the second and third tournament that the Gophers are playing in this year, as they already competed in the Southern Intercollegiates last month. Minnesota will play in the Big Ten Singles Championships next weekend before hosting the Gopher Invitational in two weeks.
