Toledo Pulls An Upset As Gopher Invitational Begins

The Minnesota men's tennis team opened play today in the Gopher Invitational at Baseline Tennis Center. The host Gophers and Denver, Nebraska and Notre Dame are competing in the event which began today and ends Sunday.
There are four groups (A, B, C, and D) in the singles competition. Each group has two players from each team, totaling eight players for each group. Each player will play four other players within their group and no player will face someone on their own team. In addition, there will be no repeat matches against the same player. Group D has more players to accommodate teams that traveled more than eight players.
There are four groups (A, B, C, and D) in the doubles competition as well. Each group has one doubles team from each squad, totaling four teams for each group. Each doubles team will play each of the three other teams within their group. Again, Group D has more teams to accommodate teams that traveled more than eight players.
There will be one winner for singles and one for doubles in each group. The players will accumulate points based on their records within each group.
Thursday's competition saw Minnesota and Notre Dame square off in singles play in each group.
Freshman Leandro Toledo picked up the Gophers' biggest win of the day when he rallied to upset No. 28 Casey Watt 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4) in Group A play. Watt is the highest ranked player competing this week.
Also earning wins for the Gophers were senior Michael Sicora and sophomore Juan Pablo Ramirez. Sicora, playing in Group C, came from behind to dispatch Notre Dame freshman and Shoreview, Minn., native Wyatt McCoy 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Ramirez won his opening Group D match 6-4, 6-3 against Michael Moore.
The event continues tomorrow with singles play starting at 9 a.m. Doubles competition begins at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow.
