Two Gophers are still in contention at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga.

The tournament, which ends Monday with championship matches, features participants from 26 schools including Auburn, The Citadel, Davidson, Eastern Kentucky, East Tennessee State, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Liberty, Lipscomb, LSU, Mercer, Minnesota, Mississippi State, NC State, Samford, South Carolina, Stetson, Tennessee, Tennessee Tech, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech and Winthrop. This is the 44th edition of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, and it is the oldest fall college tennis tournament in America.

The field is divided into three singles divisions and two doubles divisions, and there is a champion from each division. Nine Gophers are competing in the event and there are three Minnesota players in each singles division.

Sophomore Juan Pablo Ramirez and freshman Eric Frueh are in the semifinals of the third flight after posting 3-0 records in singles play. They are in the opposite side of the bracket and can only face one another if they both make it to the championship match.

Ramirez, who joined the Gophers last January, faces Calum Gee in one semifinal. Ramirez has not dropped a set yet.

Frueh, who is from Rochester, Minn., has also not lost a set, and will play Stuart Tierney of Lipscomb in the other semifinal.

The other seven Gophers have been eliminated from competition and so have the Gophers doubles teams.
