For the third year in a row, members of the Minnesota men's tennis team traveled to Lakewood Ranch, Fla. to compete in the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic. Mathieu Froment, Juan Pablo Ramirez, and Ruben Weber are representing the Maroon and Gold at the weekend tournament.
All three Gophers advanced to the second round of singles play on day one. Weber defeated Everett Dzib (USF), 6-4, 6-2 and Ramirez downed Henrik Tsukamota 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, while Froment, the No. 5 seed in the tournament, received a bye in the opening round. Weber and Ramirez would fall in the second round, but Froment stayed alive for two more bouts, defeating Richard Del Nunzio (Oklahoma State) and facing Gordon Watson (Florida).
The Gophers saw more success in the doubles bracket. Ramirez and Froment teamed up for the competition and rode to a 3-0 record, earning a spot in tomorrow's final. First, the duo defeated DeVilchez and Dzib of USF, 8-6. They followed with an 8-6 victory over Furman's Mellow and Browne. In the semifinals, Froment and Ramirez overpowered the No. 1 seeded team from Pepperdine by a score of 8-4. They will battle Watson and Federhofer of Florida in the championship match tomorrow.
