FLUSHING, N.Y. - Minnesota men's tennis senior Leandro Toledo dropped a 6-7 (3), 6-2, 7-5 match against No. 11-ranked Harrison Adams of Texas A&M in the first round of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. Thursday.
The No. 22-ranked player in the nation, Toledo made his second-career appearance at the prestigious, 32-player tournament. He became the first Gopher to qualify for the event since 2002 when he was a sophomore in 2012. The loss dropped Toledo to 7-3 on the fall season. All three losses came against top-20 opponents.
Adams, who improved to 8-3 on the fall, will play second-seeded and second-ranked Yannick Hanfmann of Southern California in the next round. Toledo will begin consolation draw play Friday.
Toledo's career singles record now stands at 78-35. Seventeen of those wins have come against ranked opponents.
The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships is Minnesota's final fall tournament. The Gophers' spring season opens Jan. 17 with matches against Marquette and South Dakota State and the Baseline Tennis Center.
