PHILADELPHIA - The Minnesota men's tennis team went 2-3 in singles and 0-2 in doubles on the final day of play at the Penn Invitational Sunday. The Gophers come away from their season-opening tournament 12-8 in singles and 1-5 in doubles.

Minnesota's pair of freshmen each picked up wins in singles and the duo combined for a 7-1 record on the weekend.

For the second-straight day, Felix Corwin won in three sets. Sunday, he downed St. John's R.J. Del Nunzio, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 to improve to 4-0 in his first season in the Maroon and Gold. Matic Spec won in singles for the third day in a row and upped his record to 3-1 with a straight-set defeat of the Red Storm's Robert Livi.

SJU opponents defeated the Gophers' Eric Frueh, Tucker Saxon, and Jeremy Lynn. Seniors Frueh and Saxon are now 2-2 in singles, while Lynn is 1-3.

The Red Storm's tandems of Michael-John Every and Elio Livi and Freddy and Ruiz Acevedo and Vaidik Munshaw beat Minnesota's Frueh and Spec and Corwin and Saxon, respectively. Frueh and Spec fell to 1-1 and Saxon and Corwin dropped to 0-2.

The Gophers will resume fall play next week as seniors Leandro Toledo, Jack Hamburg, and Mathieu Froment will take part in the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Froment and Hamburg will begin qualifying play Monday.
