MINNEAPOLIS – The 49th-ranked Minnesota men’s tennis team got off to its first 2-0 start since 2009 Saturday when it defeated both Marquette and South Dakota State at the Baseline Tennis Center. The Gophers opened the day with a 6-1 win over the Golden Eagles before taking down the Jackrabbits, 7-0.

The day began with a strong doubles performance by pairings of seniors Leandro Toledo and Eric Frueh and freshmen Felix Corwin and Matic Spec. Each tandem defeated its MU counterpart, 6-2.

Each Gopher singles player won his first set en route to the 6-1 final. No. 107-ranked Spec was the first to finish, as he downed Kristiyan Trukov, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5. Playing in the third spot, Ruben Weber notched his first victory of the spring, coming out on top, 6-3, 6-0, against Nick Dykema. Senior Jack Hamburg, playing in the second position for the first time in his career, secured the team triumph by taking a 6-4, 6-1 decision.

No. 117-ranked Corwin garnered his first-career dual-match win and No. 17 Toledo closed out Vukasin Teofanovic in the top flight, winning two close sets, 7-5 and 7-6 (4). The Golden Eagles’ Andre Romanello denied Minnesota’s sweep bid by defeating Mathieu Froment in a third-set super tiebreaker.

The Gophers did complete a sweep in their second match of the day, however.

Occupying the top doubles position, Toledo and Frueh earned their second win of the day and Froment and Weber capped a victory at No. 3 moments later to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead. The matches, which both finished with 6-0 scores, took just 18 minutes to complete.

Sophomore Jeremy Lynn was the first to add to Minnesota’s lead in singles with a convincing 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5. Following Lynn’s victory, Toledo, Spec, Weber, and Corwin each won for the second time on the day to make it 6-0. Redshirt junior Tucker Saxon closed out the night by defeating SDSU’s Gary Notkin, 6-3, 7-6 (3), for his first dual-meet singles win in Maroon and Gold.

Up next for the Gophers will be the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Austin, Texas. Minnesota will face a tough road test Saturday in ninth-ranked Texas and will play No. 35 Florida State or No. 43 Michigan in a neutral-site contest the following day.
