The Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center hosted the Golden Gophers only home dual of the season against the top-tiered Florida Gators this morning. The women's meet resulted in a rare tie, with both the Gophers and Gators scoring 150 points. The Minnesota men's squad fell to Florida with a final score of 174.50-124.50.
Women - Tie, 150-150
The 200-yard medley relay team of Zoe Avestruz, Rachel Munson, Danielle Nack and Lauren Votava started the morning with a 1:41.42 for first.
Senior Samantha Harding swept the women's distance events for the second Saturday in a row, posting a 9:53.79 in the 1000 free and a 4:52.00 in the 500 free. Harding's 1000 free time is currently No. 1 in the nation.
Danielle Nack led the Gophers in the women's butterfly events, picking up first in the 200 fly with a time of 1:59.01. Florida's Natalie Hinds challenged her in the 100 fly, where Nack finished second with a 54.06 behind the All-American's 54.01.
Rookie Rachel Munson finished first in the 100 breaststroke. Munson (1:02.81) was followed by sophomore Rae Bullinger (1:03.86) , allowing Minnesota to go 1-2 in the event. Munson had Minnesota's top time in the 200 breast as well, where she finished third with a 2:19.29.
Lauren Votava powered her way to a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle with a 1:49.69. Votava was a big factor for both Minnesota winning relays and recorded second in the 100 free with a time of 50.66.
Yu Zhou captured first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions. Zhou finished with 336.98 points on the 1-meter and a score of 380.03 on the 3-meter board. She was named B1G Diver of the Week this past Wednesday after her performance at Florida State. Lexi Tenenbaum also had a strong meet, finishing third in 1-meter (290.25) and second in 3-meter (359.10).
Minnesota's 400 free relay team of Lauren Votava, Danielle Nack, Zoe Avestruz and Kaia Grobe posted a 3:23.83 for first to secure the tie.
Men - L, 174.50-124.50
Minnesota showed depth in the men's breaststroke events, taking the top-three spots in both the 100 and 200. Junior Eric Sande powered his way to first in the 100 with a 56.60, followed closely by sophomore Conner McHugh with a 56.69 and Nick Hatanaka (57.39). McHugh also earned silver in the 200 breast (2:02.94) behind senior John Bushman's 2:02.08. Jakub Maly finished third with a time of 2:03.24 in the 200 breast, with Hatanaka posting a 2:03.70 for fourth. Maly set the Minnesota school record in the event with a 1:54.57 at the 2015 NCAA Championships.
Paul Fair earned second place finishes in the sprinting events, leading Minnesota with a 20.72 in the 50 free and a 45.67 in the 100 free. Fair was also a member of the Gophers' 200 medley relay that placed second and 400 free relay that took home first.
Junior Nick Orf gave Minnesota a "W" as he powered through the 200 fly with a 1:49.77 for first place.
Jakub Maly picked up second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:50.28. Freshman Brian Poon followed for a close third with a 1:50.72. Poon also recorded a fourth-place finish in the 200 backstroke, leading Minnesota with a 1:51.46 and placed fifth (9:38.94) in the 1000 free behind fellow freshman Michael Messner (9:29.12).
Daryl Turner returned for Minnesota after recovering from a knee injury. Turner was a member of both the Gophers' leading relays and finished second in the 100 fly (49.22) and third in the 100 back (48.35).
Matt Barnard notched a gold and bronze finish in today's diving events for the Gophers. On 3-meter, Barnard recorded a new personal record of 416.10 points and inched his way towards the Minnesota school record currently held by Mikey Ross (423.90). Dylan Zoe collected second with a 384.68 with Manny Pollard (369.83) and Alan LeBlang (359.25) for fourth and fifth, respectively. In the 1-meter competition, Barnard finished with a score of 323.48 behind Pollard's 342.15. Rookie LeBlang picked up fourth on the 1-meter board with 314.93 points.
The Golden Gophers ended the meet with a "W" in the 400 free relay as Paul Fair, Daryl Turner, Noah Busch and Hunter Doerr finished with a 3:00.80.
Looking Ahead
Minnesota will hit the road next Friday and head to Madison, Wisconsin to take on the Badgers in a border-battle. The meet is set to be contested at 6:00 p.m. CT.
