MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - Leon Bristedt slammed home the game winner in dramatic fashion as the Gopher Hockey program won in overtime for the second straight night to sweep Ohio State in the opening weekend of Big Ten play.
Behind Justin Kloos' four-point night and Tyler Sheehy's three-point night - both career bests - Minnesota earned a 5-4 overtime win on Saturday night at Mariucci Arena.
Minnesota (6-7-0 overall, 2-0-0-0 Big Ten) didn't take long to find the net in the series finale as the Maroon & Gold posted its highest offensive output of the season.
Sheehy, who also notched his first career two-goal game in the win and now has six points in his last three games, scored his first of the night just 62 seconds into the contest off a setup from Kloos and Ryan Collins while Kloos and Sheehy would swap roles midway through the second to even things back up after a pair of goals from the Buckeyes.
The Gophers reclaimed the lead with two quick goals to start the third as Michael Brodzinski notched a power-play goal at 1:13 followed by Sheehy's second at 2:37. But the Buckeyes (3-11-0, 0-2-0-0) drew within one midway through the third and scored the equalizer with 27 seconds left in regulation after the Maroon & Gold killed over four minutes of a five-minute major penalty.
The eight-goal regulation set up overtime for the second-straight night as Bristedt tacked on his team-high eighth goal of the year at 1:21 after a slew of attempts in front of the Ohio State net.
Eric Schierhorn made 32 saves in net for the Gophers to move to 6-7-0 in his rookie campaign while Christian Frey is now 0-5-0 after making 36 saves on Saturday.
Minnesota posted a season-high for shots on goal for the second-straight night, outshooting the Buckeyes 41-36.
In addition to multi-point games from Kloos and Sheehy, Bristedt finished the game with a goal and an assist while Connor Reilly tacked on his first career two-assist performance.
The Gophers close out the first half of the season next weekend with a Big Ten series at Michigan.
