Gophers Race Through Session II

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Gophers powered their way through the second session of the 2015 Minnesota Challenge this morning. Competing amongst Minnesota was 16 other midwest teams. Today's events hosted races for individuals not moving on to the Big Ten Championships, as well as some unorthodox events for individuals such as breaststroke Kierra Smith swimming the 200 freestyle.
Diving kicked off day two of the 2015 Minnesota Challenge. Minnesota took home the top five spots one the women's one-meter board. Yu Zhou collected 328.30 points for first place. Jessica Ramberg totaled for 325.55, while Lexi Tenenbaum picked up third with 322.65 points. Sisters Katy Etterman (322.10) and Elizabeth Etterman (272.15) placed fourth and fifth respectively.
On the men's three-meter, the Gophers took home places first through fourth. Matt Barnard had the highest score with a total of 364.55 points. Dylan Zoe (353.20) and Manny Pollard (351.65) followed for second and third, while Nick Rodriguez placed fourth with 329.95 points.
The relay team of Katelyn Holmquist, Aislin Rose, Allison Schumacher and Abigail Raatz placed first in the women's 200 medley relay, finishing with a time of 1:45.88. Gophers Isabel Wyer, Heidi Busack, Tori Simenec and Danielle Nack placed third with a 1:47.07. Minnesota also had relays take fourth and sixth in the event.
The Minnesota men swept places first through fourth in the 200 medley relay. Jimmy Rafter, Chase Vennefron, Bryce Boston and Niklas Brinck combined for a first-place finish with a time of 1:30.52. Following with a 1:31.66, Chris Johnson, Spencer Mattox, Chase Bublitz and Ian Gordon finished second.
Senior Tori Simenec crushed the field in the women's 400 IM. Finishing over twelve seconds faster than the rest of the competition, Simenec finished with a time of 4:23.31. Freshman Brooke Lorentzen followed for second place with a time of 4:35.72.
Freshman Connor Croan posted the top time in the men's 400 IM, finishing with a time of 3:59.36. Teammates David Friesch (4:02.75), Nick Orf (4:03.02) and Garrett Larson (4:05.14) notched the second, third and fourth place times.
Juniors Lauren Votava and Kierra Smith took home first and second in the women's 100 butterfly. Votava finished with a 56.34, while Smith had a 56.94. Sophomore Maddie Hoch followed for third with a time of 57.66. Senior Christie Clarke placed seventh with a 59.66, while Abigail Raatz (59.92) and Heidi Busack (1:00.43) placed tenth and 14th respectively.
In a Minnesota-packed men's 100 butterfly, Chase Bublitz and Viktor Bjoerk tied for first, finishing with a time of 49.39. Sophomores Paul Fair (49.84) and Bryce Boston (49.85) took third and fourth respectively. Garin Marlow had a 50.37 for fifth while RJ Leiferman (50.42) and Andrew Hartbarger (50.46) rounded out the top eight, taking sixth and seventh. Senior Brandon Hatanaka placed eleventh with a 51.18. Chris Johnson (52.13) and Conner McHugh (52.31) finished 14th and 15th, while Nick Hatanaka and Ryan Miksch finished consecutively for 18th and 19th. Erik Huft placed 21st with a time of 53.09.
The Minnesota swept the women's 200 freestyle, taking the top eight spots. Blake Zeiger placed first with a time of 1:52.27. Freshman Theresa Bushman placed second with a 1:54.00. Katelyn Holmquist, Isabel Wyer, Kierra Smith, Devin Ste. Marie, Mckenna Lynch and Brooke Lorentzen followed.
Daryl Turner had the top time in the men's 200 freestyle, finishing with a time of 1:39.39. Teammates Jan Hansen (1:39.44) and Logan Redondo (1:43.17) followed for second and third place in the event. Alex Cisneros (1:43.54) and Nick Hatanaka (1:44.45) took fifth and sixth, while Eric Sande (1:44.47) placed seventh and Jack Tribble (1:44.75) took eighth. Senior Corey Mills placed twelfth with a time of 1:45.80 and Jon Thielen had a 1:47.46 for 15th.
Freshman Aislin Rose placed second in the women's 100 breaststroke, finishing with a time of 1:07.29. Samantha Harding (1:07.72) and Rebecca Weiland (1:09.06) placed fourth and fifth respectively.
Spencer Mattox posted the top time in the men's 100 breast with a 56.46. He was followed by teammate Chase Vennefron, who took second with a 57.34.
Freshman Danielle Nack placed first in the women's 100 backstroke, finishing with a time of 58.48. Allison Schumacher posted a seventh-place finish with a time of 1:00.15.
With a 49.08, Noah Busch powered his way to a first-place finish in the men's 100 backstroke. Teammates Jimmy Rafter (50.02), Carl Newenhouse (51.31) and Andrew Hartbarger (52.21) followed for second, third and fourth. Brandon Hatanaka placed sixth with a time of 53.87. Logan Redondo finished twelfth in the event with a time of 54.86, followed by Erik Huft for 14th (55.63). Conner McHugh (56.25) and Spencer Mattox (57.14) rounded out the Gopher competitors placing 18th and 23rd respectively.
