Gophers Compete At Wildcat Invite

Ruben Weber, Jeremy Lynn, Jesse Sprinkel and Justyn Levin all competed at the Arizona Wildcat Invite at the Ventana Canyon Resort in Tuscon, Ariz. this weekend to kick off fall tournament play.

The freshmen duo of Sprinkel and Levin advanced to the doubles final and Levin won the consolation of his singles draw. The doubles tandem of Weber and Lynn went 2-1 while Weber went 1-1 in singles play.


"This weekend was an indicator of where we are at the moment. It is good to see what kind of shape we are in and what decesions we are making," head coach Geoff Young said. "I saw alot of good things, but also see a lot to work on."

The first day of the Wildcat Invitational was a success for the Gopher doubles, with both sets of doubles taking home two wins. Levin and Sprinkel defeated University of Arizona's Dunn and James 8-6 in the first round. They continued their winning streak in the second round against New Mexico's Ge and Jauregui, beating them 8-7.

Weber and Lynn also pulled out two wins, beating New Mexico State's Goldberg and S. Trecakov 8-4 in the first round and South Dakota State's duo of Cevallos and Mienzer 8-7, in the second round.

Weber continued his strong day in the singles round pulling out a win but the rest of the Gophers did not fair as well as Lynn, Sprinkel and Levin all lost in the first round.
 
Round three of doubles matches started the second day of the tournament with Sprinkel and Levin advancing to the finals after an 8-6 victory over Plaskett and Busby.

Finishing the singles play, Sprinkel and Levin both competed in the Blue Draw consolation bracket, with Levin defeating Raul Dela Torre out SDSU (6-3, 6-2). Sprinkel fell short in the match against Stijn Dehaan of NMSU, losing (5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (5).

In the Red Draw bracket, Weber fell (6-3, 7-5). Lynn competed in the consolation bracket, but could not finish losing (6-4, 6-2).

The doubles tandem of Kasahara and Jaruvang were able to overcome Sprinkel and Levin 8-5 in the doubles final on the last day of play. Levin defeated DeHaan out of New Mexico State (6-4, 6-4) to finish his weekend 3-1 in singles and 3-1 in doubles.

Up next for the Gophers will be the ITA All-Americans with Felix Corwin and Matic Spec hititng the courts in singles. The tournament starts Oct. 5 and goes all the way through Oct. 11. Oct. 15 is the start of the ITA Regional Championships for the Gophers this fall season.
