The Minnesota Golden Gophers men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped a two-day competition with a sweep against the Denver Pioneers and the BYU Cougars. Minnesota broke 13 pool records at the El Pomar Natatorium. Senior Lauren Votava broke a record in every event she competed in, which included the 100 free, 200 free, 200 free relay, 400 free relay, 800 free relay, 200 medley relay.

MEN -

Junior Matt Barnard recorded 372.40 points to win the men's 1-meter diving event, and break the pool record. Dylan Zoe followed with a score of 359.90, while Manny Pollard (344.85) and Alan LeBlang (311.95) took fourth and fifth respectively. Barnard placed second in the 3-meter competition with a 398.05. Senior Pollard and Zoe followed for third and fourth.

The Gopher men broke two relay pool records. The 200 medley relay of Daryl Turner, Conner McHugh, Paul Fair and Hunter Doerr won with a 1:29.89. Turner, Fair, Bowe Becker and Noah Busch broke El Pomar's 400 free relay record with a 2:58.11. Minnesota's 200 free relay and 800 free relay grabbed second.

Turner won the men's 100 back with a pool record time of 47.67, the 100 free (44.37)and earned gold in the 100 fly (48.40). He also led Minnesota in the 50 free with a third place finish and time of 20.78.

Conner McHugh won the 200 breast while breaking the pool record with a 2:00.35, followed by teammate John Bushman (2:02.37). McHugh also led the Gophers in his second-place finish in the 100 breast with a time of 55.89. He was followed by juniors Eric Sande (56.07) and Nick Hatanaka (56.39).

The Gophers also went 2-3-4 in the men's 200 IM. Jonathon Thielen finished second with a time of 1:52.51. Jakub Maly followed closely for third (1:52.67), while John Bushman earned fourth (1:53.85).

Thielen also led the Gophers in the 200 back with a time of 1:51.57 for fourth place.

Michael Messner placed second in the 400 IM with a 4:02.07, followed by fellow freshman Brian Poon (4:02.33). Messner also took third in both the 1000 free (9:35.05) and 200 fly (1:52.38), and finished fourth in the 500 free (4:41.41).

Paul Fair finished second in the 200 free with a time of 1:40.02.

WOMEN -

Yu Zhou led the Gophers to a 1-2-3 finish on the 3-meter springboard with a score of 343.55. Freshman Mariam Khamis followed for second (294.15), while senior Jessica Ramberg took third (279.30). Zhou completed the women's diving sweep with a win on the 1-meter board after totalling 333.30 points. Khamis (277.55) and Ramberg (272.55) followed again, with Beth Etterman picking up fourth. Both of Zhou's marks were pool records.

Votava earned gold in the 200 free with a time of 1:49.01 and 100 free (49.86) for two individual pool records, and led Minnesota to each relay win.

Votava, Danielle Nack, Samantha Harding and Erin Emery recorded a 7:28.06 to take down the El Pomar Natatorium mark. Zoe Avestruz, Rae Bullinger, Nack and Votava posted a 1:42.09 in the 200 medley relay. Avestruz, Nack, Abigail Raatz and Votva also won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:32.17 and 400 free relay (3:22.81).

Avestruz went on to pick up two individual event wins in the 100 back (55.63) and 50 free (23.32). The rookie also placed third in the 100 free with a time of 51.35.

Nack won the women's 200 fly with a time of 2:02.15, while junior Breanne Siwicki grabbed third in the event (2:06.54). Nack also won the 100 fly (55.80). Younger sister Chantal Nack placed fifth in the 100 back (57.85) and third in the 200 back (2:04.23) behind Katelyn Holmquist (2:03.18).

Harding finished second in the 1000 free with a time of 10:17.54, followed by Emery for third (10:27.61). Emery led Minnesota to a second-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 5:02.17.

The Gopher also picked up second and third in the women's 100 breast, led by Bullinger with a 1:04.93. Freshman Nicki Ciavarella had a 1:05.18. Bullinger was also the Gophers top finisher in the 200 breast with a time of 2:24.39 for fourth. Freshman Kaela Marcus followed for fifth in the 200 breast with a time of 2:24.93.

Siwicki placed third in the 200 IM for Minnesota with a time of 2:07.37. The junior also collected bronze in the 400 IM (4:27.36) and was followed by Emery (4:33.57).

UP NEXT
Minnesota will travel to Evanston, Illinois later this month for B1G Triple Duals against Northwestern and Purdue. The Gophers will then host the annual Minnesota Challenge from Feb. 5-6 at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center to close out competition before the women's and men's respective B1G Championships.
