Gophers' Godi Wins 200 Meters

MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - Gemechu Godi gave the University of Minnesota men's track & field program its first title of the weekend with more likely to follow as the Gophers kicked off the Jack Johnson Invitational on Friday at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse.
The Gophers posted the top two finishes in the 200 meters on Friday as Godi paced the race at 21.86, just beating last year's winner and Minnesota teammate Brad Neumann, who posted the runner-up finish at 21.93. Jack Wellenstein finished eighth at 22.42 in his first 200-meter performance of the season.
Minnesota also put itself in contention for a title in the heptathlon as Ben Holcomb leads the field through four events with 2,708 points. Holcomb finished third or better in three of Friday's heptathlon events including a second-place finish in the 60-meter dash at 7.16 and third-place showings in the long jump at 6.46 meters (21-02.50 ft.) and the shot put at 12.21 meters (40-00.75 ft.). Holcomb also tied for seventh in the high jump at 1.76 meters (5-09.25 ft.). Unattached competitor Matthew Baker led the 60-meter dash (7.12) and the long jump (6.67 meters, 21-10.75 ft.) before bowing out of the competition.
Additionally, Luca Wieland came in fifth in the open shot put competition at 13.97 meters (45-10.00 ft.). The Gophers also posted three competitors in the top 10 of the long jump on Friday as unattached freshman Sammie Houston finished sixth (6.86 meters, 22-06.25 ft.), James Travis finished eighth (6.71 meters, 22-00.25 ft.) and unattached freshman Jacob Buller came in ninth (6.47 meters, 21-02.75 ft.).
The Jack Johnson Invitational continues on Saturday at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse.
