MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - The University of Minnesota men's track & field program closed out the home schedule with five individual titles at the 2016 Snowshoe Open on Friday night at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse on campus.

"We had some really nice performances tonight and that was a great way to close out the home schedule for the year," Minnesota Director of Men's Track & Field and Cross Country Steve Plasencia said. "Now it's time for the championship season. The competition certainly steps up in the coming weeks, and we need to be ready to compete at a higher level."

Goaner Deng was less than a quarter of a second off All-American Harun Abda's University of Minnesota Fieldhouse record with his win in the 800 meters on Friday night. The Gophers captain led the field, which included six Gophers in the top seven, with a time of 1:49.82 (Abda ran a 1:49.68 at the 2013 Snowshoe Open). Derek Wiebke (1:52.57) came in second while Matt Rosen (1:53.01), Christian Skaret (1:53.83), Wayde Hall (1:55.27) and Sam Carlson (1:56.39) finished fourth through seventh, respectively.

Jack Wellenstein set a new Snowshoe Open record to win the 600 meters as the Maroon & Gold posted the top four finishes in the event. The Gophers freshman ran a 1:19.49 to pace the race while Shane Streich was close behind in second at 1:19.79 and last year's winner, Rashawn Fountain, coming in third at 1:20.20. Unattached competitor Josh Tracy finished fourth at 1:20.70.

The Gophers claimed the top four finishes and six of the top eight showings in the weight throw including Sean Donnelly's second career win at Minnesota. Competing unattached, the former Division III national champion and All-American cleared 21.79 meters (71-06.00 ft.) while Gian Ferretti was the runner up at 20.83 meters (68-04.25 ft.).
