The University of Minnesota Gophers fell at home to No. 71 Nebraska on Friday night dropping to 6-10 overall on the season.
"This was a tough match and Nebraska was better tonight," head coach Geoff Young said. "It was two close teams battling it out, but they came out on top. We just have to get back at it."
Marino Alpeza and Ruben Weber took a commanding 4-1 lead and did not look back, defeating Nebraska 6-2 and earning the first win of the night for the Gophers at No. 1 doubles.
Josip Krstanovic and Felix Corwin held Nebraska to an early 3-3 tie, but the Cornhuskers took the lead and held it to the end, winning 6-3.
The decision went down to the No. 2 match, and it was close until the end. Matic Spec and Jeremy Lynn came close to tying the match at 5-5, but Nebraska slipped ahead and won 6-4.
Lynn earned the first point for the Gophers, winning 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 6 spot. Lynn is 3-5 there this spring.
Weber followed closely behind, securing another win for Minnesota, (6-2, 6-3) at the No. 2 spot. That's his third win in a row, and his 16th on the season, a team-high.
Krstanovic dropped his match at the No. 5 spot, tying up the overall match 2-2.
Spec fought hard at the No. 1 spot, taking the second set to a tiebreak, but fell just short with Nebraska winning 6-4, 7-6 (6) to take over the lead 3-2.
The decision came down to Alpeza and Corwin, with both of their matches going to three sets.
Corwin came from behind in the third set 5-1 to 5-4, but ultimately could not keep the momentum and lost (6-2, 4-6, 6-4).
Alpeza's match was played out but the Cornhuskers took it (6-3, 4-6, 6-2).
The Gophers will travel to No. 52 Iowa on Sunday to take on their next Big Ten opponent. The match is scheduled for 3 p.m.
"We have another similar team at Iowa," Young said. "It looks like that match might be outside, so it will be another tough battle and opportunity to get better."
