MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota is headed to the Sun Angel Classic hosted by Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz., this Friday and Saturday. The Gophers are also slated to compete at the Mesa Classic hosted by Mesa Community College on Friday.
About the Sun Angel Classic
The Sun Angel Classic is set for Friday and Saturday at Arizona State. The meet begins with the hammer throw and open pole vault competition on Friday, followed by the majority of events on Saturday. Field events begin at 12 p.m. CT Saturday with two sessions of running events at 4:14 p.m. CT and 7:50 p.m. CT
Minnesota will face competition from Arizona State, Air Force, Boise State, BYU, College of the Sequioas, CSU-Stanislaus, Illinois State, Iowa State, Kansas, Mt. San Antonio CC, New Mexico, Notre Dame, Oregon State, Texas A&M, Washington State, UC-Riverside, UC-San Diego, and UTEP.
About the Mesa Classic
The Mesa Classic is set for Friday in Mesa, Ariz. Field events are scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. CT followed by running events at 7 p.m. CT.
Last Time Out: UCLA Legends Invite and Hamline Invite
Titania Markland won the 800-meter run in 2:09.84, Agnes Esser won the hammer throw at 59.55m, and Kimberly Golding set a new Minnesota program record in the 100-meter hurdles (13.46 seconds) to lead the Gophers at the UCLA Legends Invitational. In total, Minnesota also collected two titles, six runner-up showings, and 13 total top-three finishes.
Kate Shelerud and Allie Heifort led Minnesota with event titles at the Hamline Invitational. Three Gophers also combined for four event crowns while competing unattached at the meet. Shelerud (2:13.54), Haley Johnson (2:13.58), and Kaila Urick (2:13.60) took the top three places in the 800-meter run, and Heifort won the hammer throw with a mark of 51.21m (168-00).
Outdoor Records Fall
Six Gophers have posted all-time top-10 individual performances already this outdoor season. Kimberly Golding (13.46) and Emma Spagnola (13.53) ran the top two times in the 100m hurldes in program history. Madeline Strandmo ranks sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 10:21.84. In the field events, Shanique Wright is tied for fourth all-time in the triple jump (12.41m, 40-08.75), Agnes Esser is fifth in hammer throw (59.55m, 195-04), and Kiley Sabin is eighth in the shot put (15.32m, 50-03.25).
Gophers Break Four Indoor Records
The Gophers broke four program records during the 2016 indoor season, including the 400-meter dash, 60-meter hurdles, 4x400-meter relay, and pentathlon. Emerald Egwim (53.41) and Titania Markland (54.34) both broke the previous record in the 400m this indoor season. In the 60m hurdles, Kimberly Golding improved upon her own record (8.18 seconds). She and Emma Spagnola, ranked second in program history at 8.33 seconds, further improved Minnesota's top two times this season after both breaking the record for the first time last season.
Minnesota's 4x400-meter relay record fell this season as well. The team of Kat Keller, Emerald Egwim, Erin Hawkins, and Titania Markland clocked a time of 3:35.33 to improve on the mark of 3:36.67 set by the team of Markland, Alena Brooks, Jessica Waldvogel, and Megan Geyen, which set the record and placed third at the 2014 Big Ten Indoor Championship.
Jess Lehman (Herauf) broke her own record in the pentathlon, scoring 4,393 points to win the pentathlon title at the Big Ten Championship. Lehman first broke the pentathlon record last season, improving on the mark of 4,218 points held by Liz Roehrig from 2008 to 2015.
2016 Indoor Season Ends with B1G Fourth-Place Finish
The Gophers capped the 2016 indoor season with a fourth-place showing at the Big Ten Conference Indoor Championship led by Titania Markland's 600-meter title and Jess Lehman's pentathlon title. Minnesota scored 89 points to finish fourth, its highest indoor team finish since also placing fourth in 2014. Michigan took home the team title with 109 points, followed by Purdue (102 points) and Penn State (96.50 points) in the top three.
Up Next: Mt. Sac Relays and Holst Invitational
Minnesota is scheduled to compete at the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif., next Friday and Saturday, April 15-16, and the Holst Invitational hosted by Concordia St. Paul on Saturday, April 16.
