Gophers Undefeated in Doubles on Day One

MINNEAPOLIS - Gopher Men's Tennis opened the ITA Central Region Championships tournament with a 10-2 record in the opening rounds of singles and doubles play at Baseline Tennis Center on Thursday.
While seniors Felix Corwin and Matic Spec received byes in the first round of each tournament, the rest of the Maroon & Gold began their doubles tournament with victories. In doubles play, junior Jesse Sprinkel and freshman Jackson Allen defeated the pair of Clark and Giraldo of the University of Missouri-Kansas City 8-5. Junior Marino Alpeza and sophomore Eli Ogilvy defeated the duo of Wood and Clark from Drake after the tiebreaking, 8-7 (3). Sophomore Stefan Milicevic teamed up wiht freshman Kaleb Dobbs in his Gopher debut for an 8-4 victory over Smietana and Kerst of Iowa. The fourth and final match-up saw juniors Josip Krstanovic and Justyn Levin knock off Patel and Kartsonsis of UMKC 8-2.
Jesse Sprinkel and Eli Ogilvy each picked up victories over players from South Dakota State as Sprinkel defeated Henrique Stemmer 6-1, 6-1, and Ogilvy went over Aiden DeBoer 6-1, 6-2. Krstanovic defeated Marcella Moreira of Oral Roberts 6-1, 6-3. Alpeza knocked off Oscar Pachon of St. Louis University 6-2, 6-4. Allen earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Alvaro SantaMaria of Oral Roberts 6-1, 6-1 in his debut at the Baseline Center.
The two lone defeats for the Gophers came as Majed Kilani of Tulsa defeated Levin in three sets, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-2, while Dobbs fell to Freddie Powell of Drake 6-2, 6-4. Milicevic received a walkover to the second round when his opponent withdrew before the match began.
Rounds two and three of singles play, and round two of doubles play will take place on Friday. The first action begins around 9 a.m. at Baseline Tennis Center. Live streams of Courts 1-6 are available via the link above.
