Gophers Fall in Close Border Battle

Madison, Wis. - The University of Minnesota men's tennis team fell 4-3 in their first Big Ten Conference match Saturday at Wisconsin in the Border Battle.
Doubles
The Badgers won the first point of the day with wins in the No. 1 and 2 doubles slots. Marino Alpeza and Justyn Levin were the first to finish, as they fell to Lamar Remy and Chase Colton by a score of 6-3 in the No. 2 slot.
Wisconsin clinched the doubles point with a win at No. 1 doubles, as Josef Dodridge and Chema Carranza took down the No. 39 ranked pair of Felix Corwin and Matic Spec 7-6(4). Eli Ogilvy and Stefan Milicevic saw their set unfinished at No. 3 doubles. They led 6-5 against John Zordani and Osgar O'Hoisin.
Singles
Milicevic was the first Gopher to get on the board, as he defeated Carranza 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. It was the freshman's 10th victory of the season. Alpeza was next to finish, as he fell to Daniel Soyfer 7-6(3), 6-2. At the No. 6 singles.
After being down 2-1, Minnesota would battle back beginning when No. 68 Spec won his seventh match of the season by a score of 6-4, 7-6(4) against Remy in the No. 1 singles slot, tying the match at two each.
Wisconsin re-claimed the lead when O'Hoisin defeated Ogilvy 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the No. 4 singles slot. Josip Krstanovic evened it out again, as he took down Colton 7-6(3), 6-4 at No. 5 singles. Krstanovic improved to 7-4 on the season.
The Badgers won the clinching point when Dodridge defeated Corwin in a tight 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 match at the No. 2 singles. Corwin now holds a record of 8-5 this season.
The Gophers have two more road matches before returning home March 26 to battle the Hawkeyes. The University of Miami is the next stop for the Maroon & Gold, as they travel south for their final regular-season non-conference match of the year March 17. Big Ten play resumes March 24 when the Nebraska Cornhuskers host Minnesota.
