Gophers Wrap up Day One of ACC/Big Ten Challenge

The Gophers helped the Big Ten to a quick start over the ACC in the Inaugural ACC/Big Ten Swimming and Diving Challenge in West Lafayette, Ind. Saturday evening.
After the first day of competition the Big Ten women now hold a demanding lead over the ACC by a score of 123-44.
The Big Ten relay consisting of Gophers Tevyn Waddell, Lindsey Kozelsky and Chantal Nack, with Indiana's Christie Jensen, kicked off their meet with a third-place finish in the 400-medley relay in 3:31.60.
Waddell would later set a PR in the 200-back, touching in 1:53.47 and finishing second, just shy of the school record of 1:53.34. Nack would finish her first day at the meet swimming the third leg of the Big Ten 800-free relay. Nack split 1:45.07 during her leg of the race, while the relay finished first in a time of 6:58.30.
Kristen Hayden captured a second-place finish off of the tower for Minnesota and the Big Ten. Hayden posted a score of 261.00 to help the Big Ten sweep the event in what was her first time diving off of the platform in a meet this season.
Kozelsky and Rachel Munson finished third and fourth in the 200-breast for the Big Ten. The duo gained times of 2:08.77 and 2:09.52, with Munson setting a PR in the event. Both Kozelsky and Munson will swim the 100-breast on Sunday while Kozelsky will additionally take part in the 200-medley relay.
Mackenzie Padington swam in both the 500-free and the 800-free relay for the Big Ten Saturday. Padington finished third in both events, clocking in at 4:42.64 in the 500-free and giving the Big Ten a 1-2-3 finish, and splitting the second leg of the 800-free relay in 1:47.37.
The Big Ten men currently hold a narrow lead over the ACC with a final day-one score of 85-82.
Max McHugh had several great swims in the first day of competition in Indiana. McHugh started his meet with an outstanding relay split of 51.16 while swimming the second-leg of the men's 400-medley relay that finished third in 3:06.95. McHugh went on to post the nation's top time in the 200-breast. McHugh won the event, hitting the wall in 1:54.20. McHugh will swim the 200-medley relay and 100-breast Sunday morning.
Bowe Becker finished fourth in the 100-free Saturday evening with a time of 43.25. The event saw the top-four finishers post the top-four fastest times in the nation.
Nick Saulnier capped the first day of competition for the men while anchoring the 800-free relay. The Big Ten relay of Finnerty (Indiana), Delakis (Ohio State), Borges (Michigan) and Saulnier put up a time of 6:27.83 to finish fourth in the event, while Saulnier split the final leg 1:36.90.
The Gophers will be back in action Sunday morning for the second day of competition at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in West Lafayette, Ind. Live coverage will be available through the Big Ten Network beginning at 9:00 am CT.
