Mittelstadt Named to Big Ten All-Freshman Team

MINNEAPOLIS - Gopher Hockey's Casey Mittelstadt represented the Maroon & Gold on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team while Tyler Sheehy and Ryan Lindgren were selected as All-Big Ten Honorable Mention picks, the conference announced on Tuesday.

A native of Eden Prairie, Minn., Mittelstadt ranks second among Gophers this year with 30 points (11 goals, 19 assists) in 34 games with the Maroon & Gold - one point off the team's scoring lead. The forward ranks tied for seventh among all NCAA freshmen with 30 points. Mittelstadt is the fifth Gopher to earn Big Ten All-Freshman honors, joining Hudson Fasching (2014), Eric Schierhorn (2016), Rem Pitlick (2017) and Ryan Lindgren (2017).

A native of Burnsville, Minn., Sheehy has recorded 25 points (12 goals, 13 assists) in 36 games this season with his 12 goals tied for the team lead. His five game-winning goals this year rank tied for second in the nation. In 111 career games with the Maroon & Gold, the junior forward has 108 points (44 goals, 64 assists).

A native of Minneapolis, Minn., Lindgren has posted career highs with nine points, two goals and seven assists this year in 35 games on the Minnesota blue line. The sophomore defenseman has 16 points (three goals, 13 assists) in 67 career games with the Gophers.

Additionally, senior forward Mike Szmatula was named Minnesota's recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. Szmatula has 15 points (nine goals, six assists) in 38 games this season with 108 points (47 goals, 61 assists) in 139 career collegiate games.

Minnesota will learn of its fate for the NCAA tournament when the NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championship bracket is announced on Sunday, March 18.
