Basten, Ferlic Lead ‘U’ to Second Place at Griak

9/29/2018 2:59:00 PM | Men's Cross Country, Griak Invitational

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. – A pair of top-10 finishes from Alec Basten and Evan Ferlic led the University of Minnesota men's cross country program to a second-place finish at the 33rd annual Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday as the Maroon & Gold were narrowly edged for the team title in one of the tightest competitions in race history.

Duke claimed its second team title (2010) with 74 points in the 2018 Merrill Fischbein Men's Gold Competition with the Gophers finishing second at 77 points. The three-point separation tied for the closest finish in race history (2009, 1996). Harvard finished third at 89 points behind Kieran Tuntivate's individual title at 24:33.4.

All five of Minnesota's scorers finished among the top-25 scorers on Saturday at Les Bolstad Golf Course.

"The guys ran well. We clearly went into it thinking we could take the victory, so coming up three points short was a little bittersweet. But we have nothing to hang our heads about, it was a good run," Minnesota men's head coach Steve Plasencia said. "I think over the next few weeks, this group is just going to get stronger."

For the second race in a row, Basten led the Maroon & Gold as the redshirt sophomore finished fourth overall with a time of 24:37.4 while Ferlic added a 10th-place finish at 24:53.5. Jack Manderscheid added a personal eight-kilometer record of 25:06.1 to finish 18th. Hunter Lucas and Connor Olson closed out the scoring for Minnesota with Lucas clocking a 25:09.7 to place 21st and Olson finishing 24th at 25:12.8.

Also in action for the Maroon & Gold were Hamza Ali (40th, 25:37.4), Seth Eliason (44th, 25:41.0), Nick Rink (50th, 25:48.2), Alex Plasencia (52nd, 25:49.3), Robert Wagner (53rd, 25:49.8), Shane Streich (54th, 25:53.6), Owen Hoeft (62nd, 26:05.4), Dawson LaRance (68th, 26:12.5), Jordan MacIntosh (84th, 26:32.0), Patrick Roos (94th, 26:41.9) and Hunter Staack (102nd, 26:46.7).

Declan Dahlberg (64th, 26:09.8) and Khalid Hussein (76th, 26:20.4) competed unattached on Saturday in the 2018 Merrill Fischbein Men's Gold Competition.

Minnesota returns to action next month with a pair of meets in Wisconsin on Saturday, Oct. 13. The Gophers will preview the NCAA Championships course with the Pre-Nationals meet in Madison while another group of runners will compete at the Jim Drews Invitational in Ettrick.
