Border Battle Comes to Campus

1/23/2019 10:56:00 AM | Men's Hockey

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Gopher Hockey program returns to action this weekend, kicking off a four-game home stand by hosting a Border Battle series with Wisconsin at 3M Arena at Mariucci. Both games in the Friday/Saturday Big Ten series are set for 7 p.m. CT (Friday is on FOX Sports North PLUS, Saturday is on FOX Sports North).

Against the Badgers
The Border Battle -- Minnesota's oldest, active rivalry (dating back to Minnesota's inaugural season in 1921-22) -- comes to the Twin Cities this weekend with the Gophers owning a 169-95-23 all-time record against Wisconsin. The Maroon & Gold are 98-31-8 on home ice against the Border Battle rival although the two long-time rivals have split the last three series at 3M Arena at Mariucci. Minnesota and Wisconsin also split a pair of conference games earlier this season in Madison to kick off Big Ten play (3-2 win, 1-3 loss). Tyler Sheehy is Minnesota's active leading scorer against the Badgers with 15 points (five goals, 10 assists) in 14 career games. Mat Robson is 3-0-0 against Wisconsin while Eric Schierhorn is 6-5-0.

Celebrating 1979
The University of Minnesota and the Gopher Hockey program will celebrate the 1979 national championship team this Saturday in honor of achievement's 40th anniversary. The 1979 national championship marked Minnesota's third NCAA title and the program's third in a six-year span – all under legendary coach Herb Brooks.

The Maroon & Gold went 32-11-1 over the 1978-79 season, winning 10 of its final 11 games including a 4-3 victory over North Dakota on March 23, 1979 in the national championship game in Detroit. The Gophers were led by a trio of 70-point scorers in 1978-79 (Steve Christoff with 77, Don Micheletti with 72 and Neal Broten with 71) while team captain Bill Baker was named a First Team All-American with 54 points on the blue line (then a program record). Following the national championship, nine members of the 1978-79 Gophers joined Brooks at the 1980 Winter Olympics, where Team USA went on capture gold.

The GPS Line vs. The BMW Line
Minnesota has seen a pair of lines emerge as scoring threats on a nightly basis -- the GPS Line comprised of upperclassmen Brent Gates Jr., Rem Pitlick and Tyler Sheehy, and the BMW Line comprised of freshmen Nathan Burke, Blake McLaughlin and Sammy Walker. The GPS Line has now recorded points in all 14 games since coming together on Nov. 23 with the trio of upperclassmen combining for 45 points (19 goals, 26 assists). Meanwhile, the BMW Line has 27 points (10 goals, 17 assists) in 11 games since coming together on Nov. 17.

Hobey Baker Fan Voting
Rem Pitlick, Mat Robson and Tyler Sheehy will represent the Gophers on this year's Hobey Baker Award fan ballot as voting opened last week for college hockey's top honor. Fans can vote online at HobeyBaker.com through Sunday, March 10. The Gophers have previously won four Hobey Baker Awards (Neal Broten, Robb Stauber, Brian Bonin and Jordan Leopold).

Sheehy Continues to Climb Record Book
Minnesota's active leading scorer with 128 points (70 goals, 78 assists) in 134 games, senior captain Tyler Sheehy has reached a trio of milestones in his finale season at Minnesota -- becoming the 51st player in 'U' history to reach 125 points, the 53rd player to hit 75 assists and the 60th player to score 50 goals. Sheehy has points in 13 of the last 14 games for Minnesota.

McManus Stays Hot for the Gophers
The first Californian on roster in three decades, sophomore forward Brannon McManus is having no trouble staying hot this winter. While his career-long, three-game goal streak came to an end last weekend, McManus added an assist on Sunday to push his point streak to four games -- a new career long. The sophomore has already set new single-season career highs with nine goals, four assists and 13 points in just 22 games this season.

The Pride of Grand Rapids (Minn.)
After being held without a goal in his first 16 games with the Gophers, freshman forward Blake McLaughlin now has three goals in the last four games. The Anaheim Ducks prospect enters the weekend on a career-long, four-game point streak.

The Pitlick Production
One of several second generation Gophers on this year's roster, Rem Pitlick leads Minnesota with 12 goals and 24 points in 23 games this year. The Nashville Predators prospect has points in 13 of the last 14 games and 18 of Minnesota's 23 games this year. Pitlick has not been held off the scoresheet in back-to-back games this season.

Success in the Classroom
The spring semester starts on Tuesday (Jan. 22) at Minnesota, but the fall semester was unforgettable as the Gophers recorded the highest semester GPA in program history at 3.41 and the highest cumulative GPA in program history at 3.22 (as an athletic department, Minnesota followed suit with  school records of 3.25 cumulative GPA and a 3.25 semester GPA.

Alumni Notes
Former Gopher Hockey captain and current Winnipeg Jets captain Blake Wheeler will make his second-straight NHL All-Star Game appearance this weekend in San Jose. As of Tuesday, Wheeler ranks second in the NHL with 52 assists while his 61 points are tied for ninth in the league this year.

Schierhorn Nears School Record
Senior goaltender Eric Schierhorn (2-4-0) picked up his 12th career shutout last month as the two-time Big Ten Goaltender of the Year claimed sole possession of third all-time at Minnesota (only Adam Wilcox and Kellen Briggs have more with 13 each). With a 57-45-4 career record, Schierhorn ranks tied for sixth in school history in wins and sixth in saves at 2,579. Schierhorn has made 109 all-time appearances for the Maroon & Gold, fourth in program history behind only Adam Hauser (151), Kellen Briggs (132) and Adam Wilcox (115).

Minnesota Announces Captains for 2018-19
Four senior forwards will serve as leads for the University of Minnesota during the 2018-19 campaign with Tyler Sheehy and Brent Gates Jr. acting as captains for the Maroon & Gold while Jack Ramsey and Darian Romanko will act as assistant captains. Sheehy returns after serving as team captain as a junior last year while Gates, Ramsey and Romanko will wear letters for the first time as seniors. The four skaters continue a long tradition of Gopher Hockey captains dating back to the program's first season of play in 1921-22 when Chet Bros led the Maroon & Gold. Counting the new additions, 170 Gophers have worn a letter at the University of Minnesota in the program's 97-year history.

Gophers in the NHL Draft
Thirteen current Gophers have had their names called at the NHL Entry Draft including newcomers Robbie Stucker (2017, Columbus, Seventh Round, 210th), Sammy Walker (2017, Tampa Bay, Seventh Round, 200th), Blake McLaughlin (2018, Anaheim, Third Round, 79th) and Sampo Ranta (2018, Colorado, Third Round, 78th). Ranta and McLaughlin were selected with back-to-back picks in 2018 -- the sixth time in Gophers history that has happened. Ten NHL teams have prospects on the Gopher Hockey roster this year with Anaheim, Tampa Bay and Nashville each listing two draftees with Minnesota.

Mr. Hockey Goes to Minnesota
Incoming Gophers freshman Sammy Walker closed out his prep career by leading Edina High School to a third-place finish at the 2018 MSHSL Class AA State Tournament, earning all-tournament honors along with Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year accolades. Walker was also 34th recipient of the annual Mr. Hockey Award, given to the top senior high school boy's hockey player in the state of Minnesota. Of the 34 honorees in the award's history, 23 have gone on to play college hockey at the University of Minnesota.
