MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The final day of the Gopher Invitational featured all nine Gopher athletes playing in at least one match during the course of the day, including the three player trio of Kaleb Dobbs, Dylan Heap, and Daniel Martin playing in the championship of the Maroon & Gold Draw of the tournament. The team finished the tournament holding an overall record of 22-11 in singles and 11-6 in doubles.
Early Sunday morning, the doubles pairing of Dylan Heap and Kaleb Dobbs took on Northwestern's Joshi/Spear for the Gopher Invite's Maroon & Gold Draw championship. After securing the team point in doubles 6-3, the opportunity would fall on the group needing to win only one of their two singles matches to clinch the championship. It ultimately was the redshirt freshman Dylan Heap who would go on to defeat Joshi in a dramatic third set comeback 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) to secure the Maroon & Gold Draw title for Dobbs, Martin, and himself.
Junior Vlad Lobak also wrapped up play today after taking down Vuk Budic of Illinois 6-4, 6-1 in singles play. Despite dropping his doubles match today, Lobak finished the weekend a flawless 4-0 in singles play. Freshman Bodin Zarkovic also had a stellar weekend for the Gophers, as he finished up play with a singles record of 3-0 and doubles record of 2-1.
In his final time playing in the Gopher Invitational, senior Eli Ogilvy found himself finishing with a 3-1 singles record and 3-1 doubles record over the weekend. Additionally, Ogilvy went on to win his final singles match of the tournament on Sunday against Braeden Ho of Notre Dame by a score of 6-3, 6-2.
Notable:
This marks the second consecutive year that the Gophers have had a team secure a Gopher Invitational championship, with last year's pairing of Eli Ogilvy and Justyn Levin being last year's Maroon Draw champions.
Quotable:
"This weekend was great," head coach Geoff Young said. "I've learned much about our team and look forward to putting things together this spring. It should be an exciting season."
