BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. -- This past weekend, Gophers men's tennis traveled to Bonita Springs, Fla. to take part in the second annual FGCU Invitational. This marked the first time the Maroon & Gold had taken part in the event, and they were able to come away with a team singles record of 11-10 and a doubles record of 7-4 over three days of competition.
The three day tournament was played in a hidden dual format, in which the Gophers took on a different university each day of competition. Day one saw the Gophers take on the host, Florida Gulf Coast University. On day two the Maroon & Gold battled with Memphis University. To round things out, the Gophers fought the University of Louisville on day three.
DOUBLES PLAY
This weekend saw four Gophers finish the weekend undefeated in doubles play, with Jackson Allen and Sebastian Vile each finishing 3-0, as well as Vlad Lobak and Dylan Heap both going 2-0. Sunday's matchup against the University of Louisville ended with the Gophers having a 3-1 doubles record on the day, as the pairings of Eli Ogilvy/Jackson Allen, Siim Troost/Sebastian Vile, and Bodin Zarkovic/Dylan Heap each pair winning their match against the Cardinals.
SINGLES PLAY
A total of three Gophers finished the weekend undefeated in singles play, with freshman Bodin Zarkovic going unbeaten in his three singles matches on the weekend to finish 3-0, sophomore Sebastian Vile finishing 2-0 in singles play, and senior Eli Ogilvy going 1-0 and winning his lone singles match of the weekend against Louisville's James Bell 6-4, 6-4. For Zarkovic, his success was thanks in large part to remaining focused. "This week I was just focusing on playing the tennis that I wanted to play and not letting anything else affect my mindset," the Gophers freshman said. "I really enjoyed playing on the clay and I learned a lot this weekend."
Notable:
Now holding a season singles record of 4-2, as well as a season doubles record 4-1, Gophers sophomore Sebastian Vile is off to his best career start in his two seasons with the Maroon & Gold.
Quotable:
"I was happy with how disciplined I was throughout the weekend in terms of sticking to my plan for each point," sophomore Sebastian Vile said. "I wanted to work on being more patient and staying positive and while it wasn't perfect, I felt as if I improved and learned a lot about my game."
Up Next:
This next week features two big events for the Maroon & Gold, as Gophers senior Stefan Milicevic travels to Newport Beach, Calif. to take part in ITA Fall Nationals, while the remainder of the team stays home to host the annual Gopher Invite at Baseline Tennis Center. Milicevic will begin play on Wednesday, Nov. 6, while the Gopher Invite kicks off on Friday, Nov. 8.
