Annual Gopher Invite Returns to Baseline Friday

11/7/2019 4:44:00 PM | Men's Tennis

The University of Minnesota men's tennis team is set to host the annual Gopher Invite at Baseline Tennis Center. The tournament kicks off play tomorrow at 9 a.m. and runs until approximately 6 p.m. On Saturday Nov. 9, play will resume at 8 a.m. and run until approximately 9 p.m. The final day of competition starts at 8 a.m. on Sunday and runs until approximately 3 p.m.

The entire Gophers roster will look to match their success from last year's Gopher Invitational, specifically the success of senior Eli Ogilvy. In last year's Gopher Invitational, current senior Eli Ogilvy was able to capture the Maroon Team Draw Championship alongside now graduated Justyn Levin. Now playing in his final Gopher Invite with the team, Ogilvy will look to lead the Maroon & Gold towards success this year as well.

"Really excited to watch our team compete this weekend in the Gopher Invitational," head coach Geoff Young said. "We will learn even more about ourselves heading into our offseason. Should be a lot of good tennis to watch."

TOURNAMENT FORMAT

The tournament field is split into three draws of competition: the Maroon Draw, the Gold Draw, and the Ski-U-Mah Draw.  All players are set up on 2 man teams. Teams are arranged on the draw as first player being the higher universal tennis rating (UTR) and the second player being the lower universal tennis rating (UTR).

Doubles will be played first, one set to 6, no-ad scoring.  7-point tiebreak at 6-6. The doubles result is worth 1 team point.

Teams will then break off and play two singles matches next (higher UTR player v higher UTR opponent, and lower UTR player v lower UTR opponent).

Main draw Ski-U-Mah and the Gold/Maroon draw final singles is the best 2 out of 3 sets.  Ski-U-Mah back draw singles and both Maroon and Gold Draw regular matches will be best 2 out of 3 sets, with a 10 point tiebreak in lieu of a full 3rd.  Each singles match is worth 1 team point. The team winning best of 3 points gets the team win.

The Ski-U-Mah draw is a 16 team compass draw.  If a team loses at any time in this draw, the match format will be a 10-point tiebreak in lieu of a full 3rd set.

The Gold and Maroon draws are each six team round robins.  After the completion of round 3, the draws will be combined based on standings for the final round of play (Sunday).  The top teams will be determined as follows: Best team win-loss record, best team match win record (singles and doubles wins v singles and doubles losses per team), best team sets won record.

The Gold/Maroon Draw final will play best 2 out of 3 sets for singles.  All other matches will play a 10-point tiebreak in lieu of a full 3rd.

PARTICIPANTS

The Gophers will have a total of eight players participating in this weekend's tournament, combing to make four teams of two. In the Ski-U-Mah Draw, the Gophers will be represented by the pairings of Siim Troost/Bodin Zarkovic, Jackson Allen/Eli Ogilvy, and Vlad Lobak/Sebastian Vile. The Maroon Draw will feature the pairing of Dylan Heap/Daniel Martin. There are no Gophers participating in the Gold Draw.
