No. 25 Gophers Sweep Big Green 7-0, Face Marquette Saturday
2/8/2019 9:18:00 PM | Men's Tennis
MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota made quick work of the Big Green at home at the Baseline Tennis Center, sweeping Dartmouth 7-0. The Gophers are now on a four-match winning streak after the win, and have four sweeps total.
"A great win tonight against a really good Dartmouth team," head coach Geoff Young said. We were really up for the match. The scoreboard reads 7-0, but there were a lot of close matches. I'm happy for the guys, and they deserve it."
DOUBLES
Minnesota got off to a hot start in doubles from Marino Alpeza and Stefan Milicevic in the No. 3 spot. Alpeza and Milicevic defeated Pierce Widdecomb and Dan Martin 6-4, before Josip Krstanovic and Justyn Levin grinded out a 7-6 (4) win over Charlie Broom and David Horneffer in the No. 1 spot. Jackson Allen and Eli Ogilvy were leading 1-0 in the breaker upon clinching the doubles point.
SINGLES
Eli Ogilvy flew through his match in No. 5 singles, toppling Sid Chari 6-3, 6-1, followed by a win for Stefan Milicevic in No. 2 singles, a 6-1, 6-3 sweep of David Horneffer. Marino Alpeza then earned the clinching point for the Gophers with his 6-4, 7-5 win over Peter Conklin in No. 4 singles. Jackson Allen earned a come-from-behind win in No. 3 singles, beating Dan Martin 4-6, 6-3, 10-6. No. 53 Josip Krstanovic won in No. 1 singles 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 and Vlad Lobak rounded out the sweep with his 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win in No. 6 singles.
THE SPIN
That's four-in-a-row for Minnesota, and a total of four sweeps for the season. Krstanovic faced another tough test from Charlie Broom in the No 1 spot, but was able to parry every run Broom made. This early season success has marked a coming-out party for the newly-ranked Krstanovic, and another tough win should prove worthwhile for future tests in the season. Milicevic also got himself into a groove, and a solid top of the lineup can be the key for the No. 25 Golden Gophers.
The win also marked revenge for Minnesota, as the Gophers lost to 5-2 Dartmouth last year, with Dartmouth touting an almost identical lineup and Minnesota losing their No. 1 and No. 2 singles from last season, as well as two key doubles competitors.
COMING UP NEXT
Minnesota will face off against Marquette Saturday at 6 pm.
The Golden Eagles are another familiar face for Minnesota, as they participated in the Gopher Invite in the fall as well. Marquette, also 3-2, are coming off a split weekend, losing to Purdue 4-3 and defeating Valpo 5-2. The Golden Eagles are headlined by Alvaro Verdu, the former Big East player of the year
