MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 25 University of Minnesota Men's Tennis Team defeated the Marquette Golden Eagles 5-2. Stefan Milicevic clinched the match for the Gophers with his 6-2, 6-4 win in No. 2 singles over Luis Heredia Gomez.
"It's surprising that we're 7-1," Milicevic said. "We have been showing up to our matches, and all six guys are playing well and fighting .That's what has been helping lead us to success."
DOUBLES
Doubles was again a strong point of the Gophers' game Saturday. Justyn Levin and Josip Krstanovic built on their strong chemistry to earn a 6-2 win in No. 1 doubles, while Jackson Allen and Eli Ogilvy earned their 6-4 win in No. 2 doubles. Milicevic and partner Marino Alpeza trailed 5-4 in No. 3 doubles upon clinch of the doubles point.
SINGLES
Sebastian Vile earned a 6-3, 6-2 win in No. 6 singles, marking a big win in his return to the lineup. Marino Alpeza then beat Brett Meyers 6-2, 6-1 in No. 4 singles, while Milicevic clinched for the Gophers with his win in No. 2 singles. With the match already in hand, No. 53 Josip Krstanovic fell in a heartbreaker in No. 1 singles, losing 6-2, 6-4 to Alvaro Verdu. Both Jackson Allen and Eli Ogilvy played in a 10-point tiebreak for their third set post-clinch, with Allen falling 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 in No. 3 singles and Eli Ogilvy taking No. 5 singles 7-5, 1-6, 10-6 over Greg Anderson.
THE SPIN
Stefan Milicevic cleaned up in his match in No. 2 singles, giving Minnesota stability at the top of their lineup. Sebastian Vile also proved important in his match, as both he and Vlad Lobak have both shown that they can have success at the 6 spot after Lobak's win on Friday. Having two young players (Lobak a sophomore, Vile a freshman) who can give the team a different look lower in the lineup allows the team to have added flexibility in finding proper matchups for a match-by-match basis. Seniors Josip Krstanovic and Justyn Levin still have yet to lose this season at home in the No. 1 doubles spot, while Minnesota has yet to drop a doubles point at home either.
UP NEXT
Minnesota will return home to Baseline Tennis Center next weekend to face Wichita State Friday at 6 pm and Western Michigan Sunday at 11 am.
