Gophers Get First Taste of Competition in 2019

2/9/2019 1:22:00 PM | Rowing

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Gopher Rowing team opened up its spring campaign with a scrimmage against San Diego State on Saturday morning.

Official times were not announced for the races, which featured three 2,000-meter pieces with race start for the first 250 meters followed by a metered 30 strokes a minute pace for the remainder. The Gopher varsity 8s and 4s, and novice 8 were each in action.

"We learned a lot about where the team is at after having not been in the water competitively since November 7," said head coach Wendy Davis. "For the team, it was a great learning experience, and hopefully, they got some perspective and a reminder of what it takes to compete at this level."

The teams competed at the Olympic Training Center of Chula Vista. The center allows bass fisherman to utilize the waters on Saturday morning which caused disruptive wakes during the races affecting times particularly during the final piece.

"Overall, it was great to face some competition and get some data points as we move into spring racing," said assistant coach Chrissy Holm, who leads the varsity 4s. "We have a fairly young group, and so, they have a high learning curve with much to learn which makes training and racing exciting. Today, we saw improvements in each piece, which is always our goal."
