MADISON, WIS. - The No. 16 University of Minnesota Men;s Tennis team defeated Wisconsin in a thrilling 4-3 dual on the road.Ā Josip KrstanovicĀ decided the match for Minnesota with his 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 win over OsgarĀ O'HoisonĀ in No. 1 singles with the match locked up at 3-3.
"Wisconsin Is always hard to play but we refused to lose," Krstanovic said. "After a great performanceĀ by our No. 2 and No. 3 doubles pairings, we knew Wisconsin wasn't going to give in and they really pushed us to our limit. But this time, we came out on top."
Ā
DOUBLES
Wisconsin came in to the match undefeated in doubles points, touting two ranked doubles pairings in No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. While No. 79 Josip KrstanovicĀ and Justyn levin fell 6-3 to No. 29 OsgarĀ O'HoisonĀ an Jared Pratt in No. 1 doubles, Stefan Milicevic and Marino Alpeza came out on top 6-4 over Chase Colton and Robert Krill in No. 3 doubles. Jackson Allen and Eli Ogilvy earned their first ranked win of the season as a doubles pairing after defeating No. 69 Lenard Soha and JesperĀ FreimuthĀ 6-4 to clinch the doubles point for Minnesota.
SINGLES
Wisconsin tied the match up with a quick win in No. 5 singles, with Lenard SohaĀ defeating Eli OgilvyĀ in straightĀ sets, 7-5, 6-3, but Marino AlpezaĀ improved his record to 12-1 with his 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win over Jared Pratt in No. 4 singles. Then, Jesper Freimuth tied it up again for the Badgers with his 6-4, 7-5 win over Stefan MilicevicĀ in No. 2 singles. Jackson Allen then beat Chase Colton 7-5, 6-2 in No. 3 singles before Vlad Lobak fell 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to Robert Krill in No. 6 singles.

Despite being faced with two match points in the second set, KrstanovicĀ won 4-6, 7-6, 6-4.
"This was a very important match for me since I played Osgar for the fourth time," Krstanovic said. "Freshman year I had the chance to clinch the match for us, but I lost in the end. Today, I was down two match points in the second set, but by playing aggressive and with belief in myself I was able to save them. After that, I never had a doubt that I would win the match for us."
THE SPIN
Luck of the draw gave Minnesota a tough start to the Big Ten season against a very talented Wisconsin team on the road. For Minnesota, the doublesĀ point made all the difference in their 4-3 win, and Allen and Ogilvy proved their worth with a big ranked win in No. 2 doubles. KrstanovicĀ continues to impress with clutch wins in No. 1 singles, and the Gophers will need to continue to see those type of wins to keep winning in Big Ten play. Simply put, Wisconsin is a talented, experienced team, but a rugged conference slate will continue to test Minnesota, with ranked Illinois, Michigan and Ohio State on the horizon. For now, the Border Battle win will appease Minnesota, but larger prey awaits in the future.
In terms of the annual Minnesota v. Wisconsin Border Battle competition, the Gophers broke the even tie, and now lead 340-300 over the Badgers after Men's Tennis' win with only six competitions remaining for the year. Since the competition began in 2004, Minnesota is 9-5 against Wisconsin.
