Minnesota is now 12-2 on the season

The University of Minnesota Men's Tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to rival Iowa on Saturday night at Baseline Tennis Center. The loss snaps a 10-match win streak for the Gophers, who are now 12-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten. In addition, Minnesota had previously won 10 straight at Baseline Tennis Center and two in a row against Iowa prior to Saturday's outcome.

DOUBLES

Minnesota fell behind in doubles early after No. 74 Josip Krstanovic and Justyn Levin fell 6-2 to Will Davies and Oliver Okonkwo in No. 1 doubles. Jackson Allen and Eli Ogilvy tied doubles up with their 6-2 win in No. 2 doubles over Karim Allaf and Jonas Larson. With the doubles point on the line, Marino Alpeza and Stefan Milicevic took Joe Tyler and Piotr Smietana down to the wire in No. 3 doubles, but ultimately lost 7-6 (6).

Minnesota dropped the doubles point against the Hawkeyes to go down 1-0 in the match and then split six singles matches to lose for the first time this year since a neutral site match against Oregon on Jan. 26.

SINGLES

Marino Alpeza lost his first match of the season at Baseline Tennis Center in No. 4 singles, falling 6-4, 6-2 to Joe Tyler, while Vlad Lobak won 6-2, 6-5 over Piotr Smietana tp cut the Iowa lead down to 2-1. Stefan Milicevic then tied the match up with a 6-4, 6-4 win in No. 2 singles over Oliver Okonkwo.

Jackson Allen had Jonas Larson on the ropes in No. 3 singles, when he took a 6-2, 5-4 lead. Allen lost the match point tied 40-40, and Larson took the match 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. Will Davies then clinched for Iowa with a 7-5, 7-6 (4) win in No. 5 singles with his win over Eli Ogilvy. Josip Krstanovic ended the dual on a high note shortly thereafter with his 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 come-from-behind win in No. 1 singles

THE SPIN

Minnesota suffered their first home and first Big Ten loss of the season to a strong Iowa team. The Hawkeyes challenged Minnesota at every level and forced the Gophers to play their game. While Iowa is unranked, they are another example of the quality that the Big Ten is showcasing this season. The doubles point proved crucial in this match ,like it did against Wisconsin, and will likely be a point of emphasis for the rest of Big Ten play.
