No. 20 Gophers Wrap Competition in Tennessee

OAK RIDGE, Tennessee – The No. 20 Gopher Rowing team grabbed three first-place finishes and edged out some ranked competition at the two-day Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational hosted by Louisville on Melton Lake this weekend.
On Saturday, No. 20 Minnesota began its weekend with five consecutive second-place finishes. In fact, the team's first five races of the day ended with No. 5 Virginia in first, the Gophers second, and Miami third. The 1 Varsity 8 finished less than 0:02 off the pace of the Hokies at 5:45.005, and the 2V8 finished just over 0:04 back at 5:56.966. Minnesota's 3V4 finished the morning session with a victory over No. 16 Indiana, finishing at 6:49.703 compared to the Hoosiers' 7:01.307.
In the afternoon session, the Gophers Novice 8 jump-started the action with a first-place finish, edging out Indiana and the host Cardinals with a time of 5:55.584. The 1V8 kept the momentum going, improving on its morning pace and claiming a first place finish of its own over Tennessee (R.V.) and Tulsa (R.V.) at 5:40.721. The 1V4 and 2V8 also picked up second-place finishes in the afternoon. Tulsa edged out Minnesota (6:24.364) by just 0:02 in the 1V4, while it was the Volunteers who eked out a win in the 2V8, again just 0:02 ahead of the Gophers (5:46.819).
Minnesota returned to the water Sunday morning against a pair of ranked foes, No. 7 Yale and No. 15 Wisconsin. The 1V8 finished third (6:30.200), but less than 0:03.00 behind first-place Yale, while the 1V4 finished similarly (6:32.105) and just 0:05 off a first-place pace and less than 0:01 behind Wisconsin's crew. The Gophers finished their stay with three consecutive second-place finishes with the 1N8 (6:14.933) behind Yale's 3V8 squad, 2V8 (5:51.484) again just 0:02 behind the Bulldogs, while the 2V4 ended its weekend at 6:37.473.
The Maroon & Gold return to the open-water competition in just two short week for the Doc Hosea Invitational in Camden, New Jersey.
