Gophers Find Success at Stanford Invitational

The University of Minnesota continued the 2019 outdoor track & field season on Saturday at the Stanford Invitational.

STANFORD, Calif. -- The University of Minnesota track & field program claimed two events titles and 12 all-time top-10 marks including two program records over the weekend at the Stanford Invitational.

The Maroon & Gold earned event wins from Elliott Davis (men's 400 meters) and Tess Keyzers (women's shot put) while Bethany Hasz (women's 5,000 meters) and Megan Hasz (women's 10,000 meters) broke school records for the Gophers at Stanford's Cobb Track and Angell Field. 

The Gophers are back at it next week, splitting the squad at two meets. Members of the team will travel to the University of Arizona for the Jim Click Shootout Thursday, April 4 through Saturday, April 6 while other members of the team compete locally at the Hamline Invite on Saturday, April 6.

Women's Recap
The Minnesota women finished the Stanford Invitational with one event title, five runner-up finishes, and seven program all-time top-10 marks. The Gophers collected three runner-up finishes on day two of the meet led by Kiley Sabin and Tess Keyzers in the field events and the 4x100m relay team on the track.
 
Sabin finished second in the discus invite with a career-best throw of 54.23m (177-11) to climb to eighth on Minnesota's all-time top-10 list. Sabin's runner-up showing was her second of the meet after she also placed second in the shot put invite on Friday.
 
Keyzers added a runner-up showing in the collegiate section of hammer throw (57.20m, 187-08) to her win in the shot put (16.52m, 54-02.50) on day one of the meet. Keyzers recorded career-best marks in both events.
 
On the track, Minnesota's 4x100m relay team of Lexi Romero, Amira Young, Rachel Schow, and Val Larson led the way with a second-place finish in a season-opening time of 46.58 seconds.
 
Young also raced in her outdoor 200m debut and placed fourth in 23.86 seconds, good for fifth among all-time Gophers. She posted a runner-up finish in the 100m dash on Friday, tying the sixth-best mark in Minnesota history at 11.63 seconds, as well.
 
Day one at the Stanford Invitational for the Gopher women was highlighted by Keyzers' win in the shot put invite, which moved her into second among all-time Gophers in the event. Bethany Hasz (5,000m) and Megan Hasz (10,000m) broke Minnesota program records in their respective events as well.

Men's Recap
Three men's throwers posted top-10 all-time performances for the University of Minnesota track & field program to close out the Stanford Invitational on Saturday. 

Jonathan Tharaldsen led the way for the Maroon & Gold with a third-place finish in the men's shot put invitational, clearing 19.09 meters (62-07.25 ft.). The mark pushes Tharaldsen up to sixth all-time at Minnesota in the men's shot put. Eric Rousemiller added his own personal record in the men's shot put, finishing second in the collegiate competition at 15.91 meters (52-02.50 ft.). 

The Gophers added two more top-10 performances in the men's hammer throw invitational. Kierman McKeag recorded the seventh best performance in school history to finish fifth on Saturday, hitting a new personal record of 64.43 meters (211-05 ft.). Jon Nerdal was just behind his teammate in sixth with his own personal record of 64.33 meters (211-01 ft.) as Nerdal jumped into eighth all-time at Minnesota. 

The Gophers closed out the day with a runner-up finish in the men's 4x400 meter relay as Jonathan Webb, Elliott Davis, Josh Tracy and Ben Psicihulis clocked a 3:10.00 that was just bested by Iowa State's time of 3:09.99. Davis picked up his second-straight win in the men's 400 meters on Friday with his winning mark of 46.81 standing as the 10th fastest time ever at Minnesota. 

Matthew Baker, Lucas Trapp, Collin Sieffert and Clayton Johnson finished sixth among the 17-team field in the men's 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:16.15. 
Sammie Houston added a third-place finish in the men's triple jump invitational at 15.12 meters (49-07.25 ft.) while Mike Herauf finished fifth in the men's pole vault invite at 4.81 meters (15-09.25 ft.). 

Webb and Psicihulis also factored into the men's 4x100 meter relay squad that finished fourth at 41.17 along with Zach Nelson and Mason Roomes. 

Additionally, Alec Basten finished second in his 3,000 meter steeplechase on Friday with a time of 8:45.21 – the eighth fastest time in program history.
