Varsity 4 claims a championship finish in the Grand Final

CHERRY HILL, N.J. -- Led by a championship finish in the Varsity 4, the No. 15 Gopher Rowing team placed third at the Doc Hosea Invitational on Saturday morning on the Cooper River.
Ā
No. 15 Minnesota finished with 91 points, edged out by Big Ten rival Rutgers (R.V.) (125) and No. 14 Syracuse (102) on the podium. The Gophers' finish was particularly impressive given the team only fielded a boat in three of the top six races on the 2,000-meter course.
Ā
"We had some close races, and it was really fun to see how we look against East coast schools that had more time on the water," said senior captain Sara Nelson. "We are excited to get back to work and hopefully find some open water to practice on."
Ā
The Maroon & Gold started the day strong with each boat winning their respective heat to qualify for the Grand Finals. The 1 Varsity 8 opened with a time of 6:42.91, the Varsity 4 finished at 7:45.30, and the 2V8 claimed the top spot at 6:55.79.
Ā
Minnesota stood their ground in the Grand Finals. The 1V8 of coxswain Megan Clark, Rylie Wargo, Nelson, Whitney Holm, Addie Morris, Sarah Von der Goltz, Lindsay Eliasen, Lauren Burrows-Cheng, and Lizsy Hiebel, finished third (0:06:34.5) behind Rutgers and Syracuse and just 0:02.5 behind the Scarlet Knights.
Ā
"In the first varsity 8 race, Minnesota, Rutgers, and Syracuse were stroke-for-stroke until the sprint," said head coach Wendy Davis. "Once we are actually able to practice on the water instead of the ergs, we will be significantly faster."
Ā
The 2V8 of coxswain Elyse Terlion, Melissa Wiebke, Katie VanCamp, Christina Anderson, Abby Rieser, Natalie Stratton, Sarah Weyrauch, Sarah Reimann, and Maggie Bostwick, fell just short of the podium with a fourth-place finish (0:06:55.0). Rutgers again took top honors at 6:47.09.
Ā
"The 2V had a bit of a panic race, but we can overcome that with more practice," said Davis. "I'm super proud of our first 4 who won!"
Ā
The 1V4 of coxswain Gabrielle Tripps, Emma Jo Elder, Allie Schmidt, Christina McBride, and Maura Maguire, ended the day for Minnesota with a championship finish, edging out Rutgers by nearly three seconds at 7:45.81.
Ā
"We came off the start focused and dialed in," said Schmidt after the race. "Right away, we were in the front of the pack. In the middle of the race, we focused on moving together as a boat and being consistent with the stroke. With 500 meters left, we knew that we had to send it with everything we had to finish first. Overall, we are very proud of our effort today, and we are ready to carry on this success through the rest of the season.
Ā
"I'm proud of our efforts today across the board," said assistant coach Chrissy Holm, who leads the fours. "The results are a testament to our fitness, and it also highlighted some areas of our racing that we can refine – which only can be achieved through quality water time, racing against fast crews. We feed off these opportunities to be in a pressure cooker, stroke-for-stroke, to polish off our technique while giving our bests. It is a fine balance between aggression and grace. We have a few weeks until the Double Dual in Iowa. Consistent effort and value-driven behaviors are important for us to continuously redefine our power and potential."
Ā
Minnesota heads to Iowa City for the Big Ten Double Dual hosted by Iowa on Saturday, April 13.
