No. 17 Gophers Beat Drake 6-1, Finish Non-Conference Play 11-1
3/4/2019 1:22:00 AM | Men's Tennis
MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 17 University of Minnesota Men's Tennis team defeated the Drake Bulldogs 6-1 Sunday, finishing up non-conference play 11-1.
The Gophers will head into Big Ten play with both Eli Ogilvy (8-0) and Vlad Lobak (7-0) undefeated in singles, while Marino Alpeza (11-1) has just one loss.
DOUBLES
While Stefan Milicevic and Marino Alpeza made quick work of No. 3 doubles with their 6-1 win over Tom Hands and Calum MacGeoch, Vinny Gillespie and Barny Thorold made the doubles point interesting with their 6-3 win over Josip Krstanovic and Justyn Levin in No. 1 doubles. With the doubles point on the line, Jackson Allen and Eli Ogilvy stormed to a 6-4 win in No. 2 doubles over Bayo Philips and Finley Hall.
SINGLES
Stefan Milicevic gave the Gophers an early 2-0 lead with his 6-1, 6-1 win in No. 2 doubles before Jackson Allenwon 6-2, 6-2 in No. 3 singles. Then, Marino Alpeza clinched the match for Minnesota with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 win in No. 4 singles. With the match already in hand, Josip Krstanovic then fell 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 in No. 1 singles, before a 6-7, 6-1, 6-3 win in No. 6 singles for Vlad Lobak and a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win for Eli Ogilvy in the five spot.
THE SPIN
The bottom of the singles lineup again held strong for Minnesota with their inspired effort. Alpeza, Ogilvy, and Lobak are combined for one loss on the season, and the strength of their play will be needed against tough competition moving forward. With the three of them playing the way they are, there aren't many places for other teams to hide lack of depth in the lineup.
Going into Big Ten play, the Gophers are exactly where they want to be with only one loss on the season. Minnesota has earned tough wins in matches against Top 50 teams like Alabama, UCF, and Wichita State, and their lone loss was to Oregon, who is currently ranked No. 15. While the experience is good, the road only gets tougher for the Gophers, with Ohio State (1), Illinois (11), and Michigan (14) all ranked ahead of Minnesota, and Penn State (36) not too far behind.
Regardless, with the overall strength of the conference, Minnesota won't have any easy matches from here on out, and will need to continue winning the doubles point and holding strong with the bottom half of the lineup.
NEXT UP
Minnesota will hit the road for a Border Battle with Wisconsin next Sunday at noon.
