Gophers, Krstanovic Cruise Past Spartans 6-1

4/14/2019 2:09:00 PM | Men's Tennis

EAST LANSING, MICHIGAN - The University of Minnesota Men's Tennis team defeated Michigan State 6-1 Sunday. The Gophers were led by Josip Krstanovic who earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 101 Jack Winkler in No. 1 singles.

DOUBLES

Michigan State came out of the gates hot to steal the doubles point. Jackson Allen and Eli Ogilvy fell 6-0 in the No. 1 spot, while Sebastian Vile and Josip Krstanovic teamed up for a 6-1 win in No. 3 doubles. Then, Marino Alpeza and Stefan Milicevic fell 7-5 in No. 2 doubles.

SINGLES

While doubles went the way of the Spartans, singles was all Gophers, starting with a quick 6-2, 6-3 win from Marino Alpeza in No. 3 singles,  a 6-2, 6-2 win from Stefan Milicevic in the No. 2 spot, and Krstanovic's win in the No. 1 spot. Freshman Sebastian Vile clinched for Minnesota with his 7-6, 6-3 win in No. 6 singles.

With the match in hand, Eli Ogilvy won 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 in No. 5 singles, and Jackson Allen completed the singles sweep with his 7-6, 7-6 win in No. 4 singles.

"Today we came in hesitant in doubles and it cost us," head coach Geoff Young said. "Fortunately, we were able to regroup and get it done with better singles play."

THE SPIN

While it's tough to split on a weekend, the Gophers gained some quality experience with outdoor play against a very high quality No. 19 Michigan, and got the job done Sunday against Michigan State. Krstanovic earned a great win against the Spartans, while Milicevic earned a ranked win himself against Michigan, showcasing the strength at the top of the lineup.

UP NEXT

Minnesota will play its final two matches of the seaosn at home, facing Illinois on Saturday, and Northwestern on Sunday for Senior Day.
