Gophers Shine on Friday at the Drake Relays

Amira Young won the 200-meter dash and Minnesota's women's 4x1600-meter relay finished as runner-up.
DES MOINES, Iowa – The University of Minnesota track & field program recorded 20 top-10 finishes on Friday at the Drake Relays with Amira Young's 200-meter dash title and a runner-up showing in the women's 4x1,600 meter relay leading the way for the Maroon & Gold.
Women's Recap
Amira Young won the 200-meter dash and clocked the fastest preliminary time in the 100-meter dash with a pair of career best times to lead the Gophers. She recorded a career-best time of 11.40 seconds in the 100m dash, which ranks second among all-time Gophers. She also posted a winning time of 23.66 seconds in the 200m dash, marking another PR and moving her into third in Minnesota history.
Minnesota's 4x1600-meter relay team of Megan Hasz, Anastasia Korzenowski, Patty O'Brien, and Bethany Hasz finished as Drake Relays runner-up in 19:30.14.
Val Larson, Sophie Schmitz, Kelli Schmidt, and Paige Peschel also secured a podium finish, raking third in the 4x800-meter relay in 8:37.04 to rank fourth in program history. It marked the fastest 4x800m relay for the Maroon & Gold since Nikki Swenson, Alena Brooks, Jamie Dittmar, and Gabriele Anderson ran 8:33.98 in 2010.
Lorean Murray moved into seventh among all-time Gopher long jumpers with a career-best mark of 6.01 meters (19-08.75 feet), which was good for eighth place at the meet. Hannah Morris (6.08 meters, 19-11.50 feet) led the Maroon & Gold in women's long jump in fifth place.
Other top performances for the Gopher women saw Ryan Crotty (javelin) and Erin Huls (400-meter hurdles) place fourth in their respective events.
Men's Recap
On the men's side, the Maroon & Gold picked up eight top-10 finishes including three in the 400-meter hurdles at Drake Stadium on Friday. Clayton Johnson led the way in seventh with a time of 52.69 while Collin Sieffert came in ninth at 53.09 and Grant Fuller finished 10th at 53.17.
Minnesota also picked up a pair of fourth-place finishes at the Drake Relays on Friday with Jonathan Tharaldsen clearing 18.74 meters (61-05.75 ft.) in the men's shot put while the 4x1,600 meter relay team of Jordan MacIntosh, Hunter Lucas, Dawson LaRance and Robert Wagner clocked a 16:41.73. LaRance also factored into a fifth-place showing for the men's 4x800 meter relay along with Chris Trotter, Matt Rosen and Lucas Trapp at 7:26.42.
Meanwhile, Sammie Houston finished seventh in the men's triple jump at 14.99 meters (49-02.25 ft.) while Zach Nelson matched his personal record of 21.32 to finish 10th in the men's 200 meters after advancing out of the 100 meter prelims earlier in the day with a time of 10.52.
Kip Janvrin Open Recap
While the majority of Maroon & Gold competitors were in action at the Drake Relays, a smaller contingency of Gophers competed at Simpson College's Kip Janvrin Open on Friday with Minnesota picking up one win and five top-10 finishes.
Josh Tracy won the men's 400 meter title with a time of 48.11 while Elliott Davis finished second in the men's 200 meters behind a season-best time of 21.73.
Sophia Anderson finished as runner-up in the women's 200 meters in a career-best 25.07 seconds. Additionally, Monique Felix and Allison Gerads finished third and fourth, respectively, in the women's 100-meter hurdles. Felix clocked a time of 14.79 while Gerads ran a career-best 14.86.
